Why Dave Allen Wanted To Speak To Ritchie

Sheffield Wednesday chairman Dave Allen has revealed the reasons behind his desire to speak to Andy Ritchie about the managerial vacancy at Hillsborough.

The Barnsley chief is making quite a name for himself in Yorkshire after guiding Barnsley to The Championship on relatively modest resources and it is his ability to manage on a shoestring that attracted Allen.

When Ritchie brought his team to Hillsborough they came away only with a 2-1 defeat, but Allen was sufficiently impressed to take real notice of the young tactician and he would have been keen to discuss with him the available post, had The Tykes not spurned his advances.

"You'd want to speak to Andy Ritchie because when you see what Barnsley came and did to us with a team of players who are probably on half our wages, the manager the same, you've got to talk to him haven't you?" said Allen.

"It's quite embarrassing, I was embarrassed at the game.

"I would have liked to have spoken to him (Ritchie), but we've honoured the fact that their chairman told us we can't speak to him."

Wednesday's interest in their incumbent has sparked Barnsley into discussions about extending his contract and Ritchie, who is content to stay at Oakwell, could commit before too long.

"It could all be sorted out soon with a bit of luck and we can get it signed," said Ritchie.

"Hopefully that will give everybody a lift."

I think GS should have let Wendy talk to AR. If he thinks so highly of our manager who has a poorer record than Sturrock, the man he sacked, he's welcome to him.

GS should stop standing in the way of our manager who is obviously so well regarded in the game that a massive club like Wendy want to talk to him.

For Gods sake Gordon you are holding back the career of the greatest manager who ever walked the Earth. Let him go Gordon, you can't stand in the way of progress.
