Why do managers leave all their subs out on the pitch at half time?

Surely that just tells the other team that you have no intention of making a change, effectively handing your tactics over to them. Doesnt it also mean that your subs havent got a clue what youre saying at half time? Its bloody ridiculous in my opinion, i can see lots of drawbacks but no benefits from this.

Get's them warm and loose. They have been sitting for most of the 45 minutes previously.

Something ive always wondered too. Surely they should be in the team talk so they know what the plan is for the 2nd half. And as for staying warm and loose isn't that what warming up just before they come on it for?

They can still make a change. It happens a lot. Message from a coach.

I suppose if the manager is going to make a tactical change which requires a sub then he's in a half time, otherwise as its the same players going out, they're the ones who need to listen. Any change subsequently made after half-time the instructions are imparted to the player before he goes on. So, instructions to Done when he came on for example, "You're playing wide, tell Vaz the Waz he's upfront with Gray". That's probably about as much as it goes tbh.

That's kind of my point though. If all the subs are out on the pitch and the coach comes running out to call one player into the dressing room then everybody in the stadium including the opposition knows that said player is coming on. If all the subs were in the dressing room listening to the team talk then the other team wouldn't have a clue if somebody was coming on or not.

I also don't fully understand the warming up thing because from what i've seen the players just stand around talking and occasionally passing to each other, hardly a proper work out. They'd be better off on an exercise bike or treadmill in the changing room.

I'd be very surprised if the opposition don't have a quick look to see whether any of the subs have been called into the dressing room. They might not do but if they don't then i'd say theyre very lazy and very stupid.

I'm not talking about Barnsley as such by the way, i'm talking about a lot of clubs, we're just one of many who do it.

    The warming up bit

Whilst I don't really think it makes much odds, if they really wanted to warm a sub up without the opposition knowing then there's a ruddy great hall type area right next to the dressing room under the stand, they don't need to go out on the pitch
