It's a disgrace to a wonderful player. Why would they want to release their top wicket taker? It's baffling.

Because they are businessmen, not cricketers.

    Genuinely gutted

One of my all time sporting heroes. A player who truly has made the most of his ability and I think he is one of England's most under-rated players. England treated him like crap and npw Yorkshire have done the same

    Dont agree at all

Good businessmen dont behave in that way either treating staff shabbily isnt good for morale amongst the remaining staff and in an organisation in the media spotlight it may make it harder to sign other players - if you have a choice to join someone who treats employees well and someone who doesnt which will you join?

I must admit to being totally baffled by the decision - there must be a reason but its not at all clear what the reason is.

Hope he gets a new club quickly

He was negotiating a new contract...

... and was in line to become Captain.

Which makes it an even more curious decision.

    Never understood with Hoggy

why England dropped him without a second thought and yet persevered with the likes of Harmison for several seasons waiting for him to come good.

Sidebottom and Anderson still not as good for England as Hoggy imho, don't know why he never got another look in.

No one better when the ball is swinging.

I agree 100%. Yorkshire struggled last season.

In order to win county championship matches you need an attack which can bowl the opposition out twice. Durham proved that with their attack in spite of losing Onions and Harmison they had quality back up bowlers to come in.

And we struggled to bowl the oppositioon out and without Hoggard, we will find it even more difficult. It's not like we've got a bunch of quality replacements to fill his shoes!

We can only assume that the money they will be saving on Hoggard's wages will be spent on an expensive overseas player!

And why, when at a cloudy Headingley, they chose to play Patterson on debut over Hoggard. Ridiculous.

I am a fan of Hoggy but the fact is that he was offered a new three year contract earlier in the season he turned this down because he wanted more money and a longer contract. Obviously the county werent prepared to better their original offer. HE brought the subject of captaincy up with the management probably as part of his contractual talks at no time was he "inline" to be the next captain.

It's simple, he wanted more money than they could afford/were willing to offer. Whether he/they were willing to find a compromise is questionable and is what seems to stink about this.

Yorkshire have ploughed money into the stadium to attract the Test/international matches which has affected the revenue for players wages. It's the same conundrum that happens in football but the problem is that instead of betting on bigger crowds, like in football, they're hoping to get the International matches. The thing that takes the brunt of this gamble in both cases is the team. Yorkshire could never afford Headingley without the International matches.

Was there for the first day. Nobody in the Western Terrace seemed to understand the choice.

    The club's take on it...

The Yorkshire County Cricket Club have held lengthy discussions over the past few months with Matthew Hoggard before informing him last Thursday that they would not be offering him a new contract for the 2010 season.

The Club is extremely disappointed that Matthew broke the news to this morning’s edition of The Times newspaper. The Club has every respect for Matthew Hoggard as a player and as a person and had been working over the weekend with Matthew’s representatives at the Professional Cricketers’ Association to ensure the news broke at a mutually agreeable time, thereby assisting his transition to a new county in the most positive manner possible.

An extremely competitive two-year contract, with the option of a third year based on performance, was offered to Matthew Hoggard at the beginning of the season; a deal that would have retained his position as one of the highest earners at the county. Matthew turned that contract offer down as he wanted a higher salary and a longer contract.

The Club and player agreed that they would review the situation after the season had ended. Over the course of the summer the Club has reviewed its playing staff for 2010 and made plans to secure a number of key players. This has become increasingly costly due to the tightening of work permit regulations for overseas players and the demand for young England qualified talent.

On 23rd September the Yorkshire Board of Directors met to review outstanding contractual matters. Following this meeting the Club’s Chief Executive, Stewart Regan, was asked to review the 2010 playing budget with Martyn Moxon, Director of Professional Cricket. As a result of this review, Matthew Hoggard’s appraisal was postponed until Thursday 8th October.

At the meeting last Thursday, Matthew Hoggard was informed that the Board had made the decision not to offer him a new contract. This decision had been made in light of a number of factors – the current economic climate, the player’s contractual requirements and a detailed analysis of the makeup of the professional squad for the 2010 season.

It was suggested in this morning’s Times newspaper that Matthew had been holding talks about the possibility of becoming Yorkshire captain next season. This was something that Matthew had personally tabled with Colin Graves, the Chairman of Yorkshire CCC. Colin informed Matthew that he would feed his request into the next Board meeting, but at no stage was Matthew ever offered the position of Yorkshire captain.

Martyn Moxon, Director of Professional Cricket for Yorkshire County Cricket Club, said: “I would like to thank Hoggy for his contribution to the team during my time here at Yorkshire. He always gave 100% and his presence in the team has dug us out of a hole on more than one occasion. I know he will continue to give his all and I wish him every success in the future.”

Stewart Regan, Yorkshire’s Chief Executive, said: “Matthew Hoggard’s bowling statistics speak for themselves and he has been one of the country’s top bowlers during his time at the Club. On behalf of the Board of Directors I would like to thank him for his outstanding contribution to the game of cricket for both Yorkshire and England and wish him and his family all the very best going forward.”
