Dad supports them so took me as a young child. The football landscape at the time meant I followed Liverpool but supported Barnsley.
Because my Grandad took me to a game when I was quite young and I caught the bug. At first it was more the opportunity to spend time with my Grandad, but now there's no way I could support anyone else.
my Dad took me to this great big, concrete place when i was 7. I had to stand up all game on a milk carton - he wasn't a football fan - I fell in love at that first game. 33 years on and my eldest son (19) is a dyed-in-the-wool red and this coming season sees my youngest son (5) with his first season ticket.
Dad took me to see Barnsley v Hull at Oakwell around 1980, he was from Hull but moved to the Dearne area to work, i think secretly he hoped Hull would win and i'd be a hull fan, Trevor Aylott got a hat trick and Barnsley won 5 - 1 i believe. From then on it was Barnsley all the way which my oldman didnt mind as we went just about every home game until the strike, We sat in the west upper that night with cushions for the seats, right treat !
Up until I was about age 9 or 10 I supported Leeds (yeah yeah I know) but my dad took me to reserve game against Leicester then my mates dad started taking me to games and that was it, I was hooked
My granddad took me once or twice in the late 70's early 80's. Think first game was 3-3 v Gillingham but I don't remember a thing being only 5 at the time. A few years passed and then my Mum's bf (a former fringe leeds player) took me to a SWFC game. He knew one of the directors of the day and we got seats in the executive bit with dinner thrown in and soup at half time (think it was a 5-1 win v Brum). He took me a few more times and remember standing on the kop when they drew 0-0 with Liverpool and I didn't see a single thing. For some reason, he then started taking me to oakwell instead... maybe distance, maybe cost... no idea why. But it stuck, there was more connection with the team and I found I preferred red to blue.
My dad took me to the FA Cup replay Vs Stoke City, around 1988 I believe. I was only 7 at the time. Remember sitting on the wall at front of Ponty End, getting my refreshments from that trolley that used to get pushed around. Loved it. Before then I was taken to a certain Yorkshire club to watch a game Vs Liverpool and also Vs Everton, hated sitting in the boring seats.
My Granddad was an armchair Leeds fan in the 60s. I followed suit and in the early 70s I used to go to Elland Road. Around my 16th birthday in 1975 I became appalled by the level of violence both at the games and after culminating in a game against Manchester City. There were Leeds fans beating up City fans and vice versa. When the Leeds fans couldn't find any city fans they turned on their own. This was not just fisticuffs it was bottles and bricks and I genuinely feared for my own safety. I never went back. My mate Andy who is a dyed in the wool fan asked me if I wanted to go to Oakwell, well why not eh ? I went and that was it. I started to follow the Reds all over the country during the Iley out period and onwards. I've seen trouble (Grimsby) but nothing like I had the misfortune to see at Leeds. I now detest Leeds.
My Dad has always been a supporter - when I was really young he used to disappear on Saturday afternoons leaving me to watch Grandstand waiting for the teleprinter to give our score. When I was old enough (in 1970!) he took me to my first game and I have been going with him ever since. We lost the first game I went to - and got relegated to the 4th division in my second season but used to go to every home game all through the 70's until I left Barnsley in 1981 - now I cant make every home game anymore but do go to more away games than I used to in the 70's not sure if that makes me a proper fan as I have missed quite a few games in the last 43 years
grandad took me to my first ever game as a 5 year old on a freezing tuesday night against Swindon. been going ever since!
