why does a league one team go to Italy to train?

Didn't work last year when they went abroad pre season, did it? Waste of money.

Its pathetic. Ben says players need to buy into the town of barnsley then spends a fortune sending them away ro train.

I'm a bit flummoxed with it, too. How does the club measure the benefits gained by this, especially set against the expense? But just because I can't see any obvious, immediate benefit to the exercise doesn't mean there isn't one. Which is why I wouldn't write it off, nor claim it I know what's best for the club (not that you are doing so, mate).

What's pathetic about trying to prepare your team in the way you consider to be the best? Guaranteed warm weather, free from home distractions, chance to bond and build up camaraderie within the players. If they've budgeted for this, I honestly can only see positives. It's about trying to maintain a certain level of professional standards. Belief is important, if we believe we're a big club (at this level) then we will be a big club at this level.

Altitude training, maybe some new techniques, but most of all an opportunity for the new squad to bond in a pleasant environment.

The only way to measure the benefit is to pook at recent history which saw a relegation following a foreign trip and previously an injury list bigger than any other team following a foreign trip which was described as being all about fitness.

And yet the club says match day experience will suffer next season to cut costs while kennedy gets a holiday in italy

So not buying into the town of barnsley then?

Does that mean because there appeared to be no obvious benefit to trips under Hill & Flitcroft, then automatically there'll be no benefit to this Summer's? As I said, just because I can't see the benefits that couldn't be replicated by potentially cheaper trips to places like the West Country or the Scottish Highlands, doesn't mean they don't exist.

As stated, "a pleasant environment", they'll spend enough time in Barnsley between August & May.

Attitude training might be more beneficial.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the plans to remodel the town centre in the style of a Tuscan village?

It would be nice to show the players a sneak preview of what it is like to be a Barnsley resident.

That's what I thought, there's the peak district 20 miles away why don't they just go there? If they want to do some team bonding go camping, get some fires lit and work together. Will be costing a bomb taking everyone to Italy, makes you laugh.

I know I'm repeating myself like an old, stuck record here, but just because I don't see any obvious benefits of such a trip doesn't mean they don't exist. There have been some valid suggestions put forward on this thread. I remain open minded on it and am willing to give the benefit of doubt to folk within the industry, who have far greater knowledge & experience than I.

Nothing says "league One title contenders" quite like a pre-season at Scout camp!

Just think it's ******** that they're begging hard working people for their money for season tickets early so they can finance a trip to Italy for that undeserving pile of *****.

I can see the point new season new team new start. A bonding session. Guaranteed good weather that similar uk based trips wouldn't give you so you can be sure that whatever outdoor training schedule you have planned can happen. I would also imagine given the cost of things in the UK that it would be cheaper than doing it here.

Should've sent them out to work with season ticket holders to see who pays for their wages and how.

How do you know it didn't work? For all we know we could've been even worse without it.

I think it's a great idea. I'd imagine there'll be at least 10 new players & it'll be a good way for them all to spend time together, get to know each other & build morale
