I'm new to the board so I don't know everyones reasoning here but, why does everyone hate Simon Davey so much?

We were never great (we haven't been since we came up)
We played some bad football (we've done that a lot since we came up)
And he was working under financial constraints (like all our other managers)

but he bought in some players I genuinely enjoyed watching, some of the best I've seen at Oakwell in people like Muller and Anderson

And obviously he took us to an FA Cup Semi, which we would have won had Kayode not missed that sitter.

He also kept us up every season which I believe was his remit?

So I'm not saying he was a great manager, he wasn't. Tactically poor, and made some bizarre decisions but what did he do to be so hated?

I'm sure there's going to be a multitude of reasons and I am about to be destroyed.

cos he was an arrogant sod with sly devious tendancies. Had people spying on other staff members and alsorts from what i've heard. Think Andy Richie and Rick Holden could probably tell you a few stories about him.

I for one don't or didn't hate him, didn't particularly like him but certainly didn't hate him. We had some good times under him but also bad, but he never took us down! So I certainly respect him, he'll always be in our history books for taking us to the semi final.

Now that Keith Hill is a different story...

I see a pattern emerging already. Never met him personally so wasn't aware of his level of cnutitude.

Financial constraints? He spent £1.2m on one player. His remit was not to finish 21st.

    I did not hate him

not saying I liked him especially, but hate is a very strong word. He gave us some fabulous memories for which I am grateful. But at the end he did lose the plot a good deal and so had to go.

Re: I did not hate him

The negative moaners were butthurt when Davey responded to their criticism, and not always in the most polite or sensible way. That, and he was pretty good at coming up with excuses when we lost a match. But that can be said about 99% of managers when things aren't going their way.

I would imagine he still had the lowest/one of the lowest budgets in the league.

Incidentally we were looking alright with that player until he got his head caved in.

I don't particularly. Although I can't say I'm super keen either. He's not exactly blessed with a loveable personality.

I do think he had more to spend than any other manager since we've been back in this league (think of the money wasted on transfer fees and wages on the likes of Mostto, Christensen, Mattis, Ricketts and Johnson). I think Robins and maybe even Hill would have done a much better job with those funds. Although Hill may just have bought the entire Rochdale squad. He'd have certainly complained a lot more than Davey did.

I don't think Davey did anything particularly bad to us, but he showed his true colours with the whole Darlington/Hereford thing. Then the transfer of Dominik Werling from Darlington to Hereford and the whole dying mother bit as he followed Davey from one club to another was just disgusting. They all got what they deserved in the end though.

I do agree he may have had more to spend than those that came after him but I can forgive him his bad signings because he got us some players I loved watching.

Robins must have spent a fair amount on O'Connor and Harewood ? maybe even the wages of Texiera?

Hill was also very guilty of wasted funds, Toni Silva, Rooney, Done, Cameron Park, Emile Sinclair, Greening, Buzasky, Collins.

I didn't think Davey was that bad for us so didn't understand the dislike I've heard towards him, but I'm beginning to get the picture that he wasn't a particuarly nice guy, so fair enough !

It would be interesting to see how many other clubs spent £1m or more on a single player that season.

I'm not arguing with you mate just saying it's all relative, I'm sure there weren't many others at all but I bet they were spending a lot more than that on their wage bill.

You'll not get me sticking up for Hill. As far as Robins is concerned I think it's fair to say we were duped over the signing of O'Connor. That Leeds game, his debut, he looked brilliant. Any manager would have been barmy not to want to sign him. Trouble is, he had a cocaine problem. There were rumours, but they could have been just that. Fact is Birmingham knew all too well he had that problem but didn't disclose the information to us and we ended up with a druggy on our hands.

The others are loan signings and to be fair, Harewood performed for us. Davey signed the players I listed above on permanent contracts, often paying good money for them, yet they've barely got a dozen games between them. He also spent £1.2 million on Hume. We'll never know if he was worth that, I suspect not but you can't really judge him after the injury he sustained. I don't know if I would have had the bottle to ever get back on the field at all after what Hume suffered. What we do know, is that no other manager has had anything like that kind of money to spend on one player. I'm not sure they've had it to spend on an entire squad.
