I broke my boycott of it today hoping there would be something interesting on the back page, if the Lawrence stuff was true then that perhaps was interesting. But, in general, the Chronicle is so negative about the club as if they are trying to put people off going to Oakwell. Murray's 'match report' read more like an editorial piece on Russia Today. Suggested there was 'no-one' in the stadium when O'Grady (and others) picked up their awards. It was 10/15 minutes before kick-off, the place never fills up until kick-off, people are normally still coming in up to ten minutes after kick-off. It certainly wasn't empty. Apparently QPR had their second string out So did we, Rose up front? A bench full of kids? Only Bobby Hassell's introduction got the fans 'on their feet' What about O'Grady bringing it back to 2-1, we were in the ascendancy, then he scored a good goal to bring it back to 3-2, it weren't a bad game. QPR weren't playing to their best We looked good in spells, they didn't dominate, is he saying they were just letting us have it? How about the local paper getting behind the club next season? I don't mind people telling it how it is but why p*ss on the clubs bonfire every single week?
In recent years the clubs relationship with local media hasn't been the best I get the impression that any journalist asking an awkward question about the club ,it's owner or recent management style don't get to ask another question again. I might be wrong and the calibre of local reporters may be just rubbish
Bobby seems to have been a big source for them given the apparent friendship he has with Matt Murray. Everything else they do is just a rehash of what has been written by other media organisations or whatever has been said in the press conference. Very rarely is there anything original.
Murray's got a couple of thousand of followers on twitter yet when he gives an opinion he barely gets a retweet or people agreeing with him. He seems badly out of touch with our fans. The less said on O'Kane the better, no idea what games he watches. I think a lot of people have stopped taking the paper seriously since the takeover nonsense & it has about as much credibility as the Daily Sport at this time
The standard of actual reporting is much better than yesteryear when we used to fill whole fanzines with Lodge-isms. The difference being that it used to be unfailing critical and now the critical faculties are exercised. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
not just football......there boxing journalist, ashley ball, seems to have a gripe with, lee noble,a local lad who despite past troubles is on the up............
We made comment about how empty it was - certainly much emptier than it normally is 10-15 mins before kickoff. Certainly don't think the official attendance figure was the number of people in the stadium as the number of home fans was still around 9,000 according to that.
I've not read the paper yet but going on what you said I don't see any issue. The ground was pretty damn empty for the POTY award being handed out. People have known for years it gets announced about 15 minutes or so before kick off so that people chose to not turn up a little earlier than normal says more about how poor our season was. QPR did have their second string out. We didn't as Rose aside they were all on the bench. Based on starting 11s ours was much more first team than QPRs who didn't bother with the likes of Barton and Wright Phillips. The Bobby one is probably stretching it a little but looking around the ground plenty didn't bother standing up to applaude the goal.
I don't get the Chron, because the newsagents don't stock it here in Cambridge, my best line of info comes from this board (god help me). It seems to me though that a bit of healthy criticism is more likely to keep the club's executive on their toes and makes them answerable to the public. We just completed a lousy season during which we won only 9 games and saw some utter dross, being positive is one thing, but delusion is something else. It is the duty of the press to bring incompetence to book, otherwise like Cameron they just become cheerleaders for the establishment.
As to how QPR played - that's the way I saw it, they were just content to win the game, the way we conceeded such a soft 2nd goal so soon after the 1st I feared we were going to get hammered, but I think they were just happy to sit on a 2 goal lead and not pick up any injuries, so they upped it again when we pulled one back.
