With the Super League operating a franchise system from 2009 and plans for a new ground in Wakefield still to get planning permission, don't be suprised if Oakwell is staging Super League within the next 2 years. There are 4 amatuer rugby league clubs in Barnsley, at Grimethorpe, Dodworth, Dearne Valley and Hoyland.
how does a franchise system work? I've heard it used in relation to American sports, and teams moving from their original location to other towns???? that's as far as my 'knowledge' goes
That d be Excellent ' .... (Y) At least we'd see some passion down oakwell '' Cause footballs not up to much at minute....
RE: Cause it's not a rugby league town nt Thats probably historic, because the League split from the union becasue the working class players weren't be allowed time off by the employers. I understand that most were in the textiles industry which is mainly the Pennine towns in west yorkshire and lancs. I suppose the exception to this are the mining areas in Lancs such as leigh and around Cas and featherstone. Hull I don't understand that. This is just a theory I made up... but it sounds convincing. I think.
We are half way there though, nearly getting rugby scores against us and it must be a rugby ball we are playing with cos it's all up and under! (doh)

A franchise will be offerred to clubs based on their business plans and facilities, as well as results, with each club having to meet a minimum set of criteria. Wakefields ground at the moment would struggle to reach the standards set down for entry to the Northern Premier League.
will there still be promotion/relegation then? as there isn't in American sports and it's possible teams winning the second division might not have the necessary facilities
thats not set in stone yet is it. franchise from 2009 is only a proposal isn't it. wakefield would only ever play games at barnsley while a new stadium was being built
Just what we need. A bunch of peanut-huggers knackering our pitch up, all for a cut of the gate receipts from the ~4000 crowds that Wakefield would get. Marvellous.
