if he wants to play at wembley then he should agree to being released.

    So..

...does it make sense for him to give up the remainder of his contract (reputedly would be about £500,000) to play at Wembley? Don't think so.

Yes you can sign a free transfer but Luke is still under contract to WBA until the end of the season.
WBA would have to TERMINATE Luke's contract and there is no way they will do that.
They just can't release him because of his obligations to the club, and one of those obligations is to fulfill his contract.
Whether that be at his club or on loan to another. And should he sign until the end of the season, with us taking him on a FREE at season end, it will only be on loan terms whether we pay his wages or whether they are paid by WBA.

If you are asking the most asked question in the history of this board the answer is simple:

Whatever the outcome with Luke Steele, he will NOT play for Barnsley Football Club should they meet West Bromwich Albion in the FA Cup Final

Brilliant comment it's always us thats made to look the bad guys, but if steele really wants it then that should be suggested. Lets not forget one other issue is what if we win Cardiff and West Brom beat portsmouth, if he hasn't signed for us fully then again we are looking for a new keeper. Lot of if's and but's here but yet again most Barnsley fans on here want to blame our club moan, moan, moan

    No we can't

He was with WBA when the transfer window shut so therefore he cannot sign with another club until the transfer window opens in June.

As Jay said, because he was in contract when the transfer window shut, whether they terminate or not, we can't sign him on a permanent deal until July.

Not if they were with a club at the end of the last transfer window

I think I might have that inscribed on my grave.
