I've always been a fan of the wing back formation thanks to old Danny boy who took us up playing Brazilian football. I think this formation makes an average set of players play as a really useful team.

    GK:Flinders
    CB: Reid
    CB: Carbon?
    CB: Vaughan/Kay
    LWB: Williams
    RWB: Austin/Tonge
    CM: McPhail
    CM: Burns
    CM: Shukes
    ST: Nads
    ST: Hayes

Shuker can play the role of Clint Marcelle behind the front two.:pff

It would make the signing of Devaney pointless if we did but anyone agree or disagree?

We have so many reasonable midfielders and so many crap defenders it can only make sense.

Apparently Devaney can play left, right thru the middle or up fronty

Well, we have Howard, Kell and Devaney all about to compete for midfield places. Reports suggest these are decent players. Burns is doing OK and I can't see Mcphail being dropped. Shuker should always get in the side. So I think a 5 man midfield may be something that Ritchie is considering.

When Nardiello is out we could do with some pace up fronty

No idea. Definitely not at work, though. Honest.

    'Cos we can't?

Full backs too slow and have dubious crossing ability, defence too slow, midfield can't handle a battle in the middle of the pitch, and no creativity for the front two to feed off.

And no, a decent result against Preston doesn't count.

    That's kind of the point.

We don't really have a combative central midfielder ... so the only way around it is to outnumber our opposition in there - ie 3-5-2.
I think it could work - if we had maybe 6 or 7 better players.

    You know nothing.
Your decision making is about as good as the captain of Zimbabwe - who has just won the toss, put NZ in to bat & seen them get 397-5 in 44 overs.

But we don't have good, mobile defenders. Outnumbering them in midfield is no good if only two of them are going to put their foot in while leaving us even weaker at the back.

Plus, if Burns - our one decent defensive midfielder - is the one marauding forward, who's covering?

No, we got away with it. Brave decision and all that, but I can't see it working on a regular basis. Especially as we'll have upped our game last night 'cos we are playing a 'good' side. (Preston? Good? F**k me. How times change.)

    Not sure.

We seemed to have a nice shape when we settled in to 3-5-2.
    But I take your points.
And Burns looked far better going forward than he did coming back. I just don't see him as a true defensive midfielder.

    This thread is gay.

yeah, but apart from those obvious flaws...

we're not a bad team are we?

I'm a big fan of 5-3-2/3-5-2 when you have the players to handle it.

I just don't think we have. I hope I'm wrong. It's happened before. Once.

hello, is there any one from the Barnsley supporters team on the message board who is playing against the Dutch lads on Friday ? (we play 4-4-2 by the way)

I've decided that you have made this thread gay.
    You thread ******.

You are talking to Billy Sceptical here.
But it almost seemed like we had the players for 3-5-2.
Admittedly - a nippy left wing back & a decent centre half would help ... but when everyone is back from injury I don't think we are that far away.

It was just nice to see them battle for a change.
I'm sick of seeing us give up like a bunch of little girls.

*I reserve the right to talk complete ballax & change my mind (a la Roundsman) whenever I feel like it.

    I heard...

Journo Tyke is an awful footballer?

He just runs about a lot, apparently. In an amteurish Chris Shuker manner...but still not as good.

    Please help.

Good, should be fun. Most of us will be in Barnsley around lunch time so we may have a few beers before the game in town. Any recommendations where we should go ?
