Why have we not offered Luke Steele a new contract?

I just don't understand it, he's an amazing 'keeper so why have we not offered a new contract yet?

Is it money? Might we get a good price for him?

He's a good lad, needs signing up again before he leaves in January and were up sh*t creek IMO.

Only the club could answer that

I don't think they can come up with a good answer to be honest.

One of our best assets that we should be protecting.

Would be interesting to get a response.

    I highly doubt it, however.

In January it will be another Vaz/Buttercup situation brought on by the club as their own fault.

    I wonder if

The salary he's now on exceeds the present budget restraints? We are obliged to honour his present contract, but may not be able to offer the same monies on a new one. Therefore, it's possible we won't offer him a new one until this has practically run out.
    Just guesswork on my part.

    Re: I wonder if

Sounds feasible to me and presumably its in his best interests to hang on and find out what else is on offer from other clubs so its probably completely pointless?

    Re: I wonder if

Probably the best reason, I can't think of anything else.

It's a real shame because he's been one of the best players we've had since 2008.

    Re: I wonder if

Only one way to find out if offering him a contract is pointless and that's by offering him a contract. Preferably a three year contract ASAP and not wait until November where a two year contract will probably be turned down.

    It's possible that

Luke is happy here and would be willing to accept a new contract on lower terms (ala Jim O'Brien & Steve Foster) if one were to be offered to him. But he's unlikely to do so before the present one expires and it's ludicrous to think he would or should. I can't prove it, but I believe Ben Alnwick has been signed as his eventual replacement.

    seems a likely scenario

    Re: It's possible that

Ive said it before that I think that Steele will be on a fairly good wage, possibly one of the highest if not the highest at the club - he came from a prem club in West Brom and at the time of the loan we were arguing over who would pay his wages due to the cost. Regardless of how good he is I think that the club won't want to/cant afford to keep him on the wages he is currently on as part of the cost cutting that has been undertaken this last 12 months.

I fully expect him to be leaving us this season, shame - but I think its a cost issue.

    Re: It's possible that

But if that is the case I'd prefer to sell him now and get a decent fee as opposed to letting him go in January for £500k.

    Re: It's possible that

Luke Steele wont be the number 1 choice keeper come November, mark my words someone please. He has been offered a contract but after hearing what ButterCup was offered to stay he felt his offer was disrespectful for someone with his 'ability'. Had a bust up and will be off in january, maybe even next month.

He hasn't been offered a contract. Rowing said Hill won't be until around November.
