Fair enough if we made it to the playoffs and there would be another game, but what's the harm otherwise?

Because it's trespassing on someone else's property.

    From the Official Site:

We would also like to politely remind supporters attending Saturday’s game not to enter the pitch at any point. After the final whistle the Reds players would like to say thank you for your fantastic support throughout the Season by doing a lap of honour around the pitch perimeter. Fans will have the exclusive opportunity to meet their favourite players at the bottom of the West, South and East Stands and get autographs and photographs. Should any supporters run onto the pitch after the game, unfortunately the players will not be able to return to do a lap of honour. Please be respectful of those supporters who wish to enjoy the lap of honour and please keep off the pitch. To reiterate, the players will not be returning to thank the fans should any supporters enter the pitch after the final whistle. Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.

It's a matter of respect for fellow supporters and those who encroach on the playing field show zero.

Did anyone complain about the pitch invasion when we won promotion to the Premier League? It's a serious question. I can't remember.

Because it's against the law to trespass. If that wasn't the case any of us could go in any garden we want. Can just see it now "Hello Mrs Smith just using your garden for an afternoon BBQ. I know it's your property but i'm not doing any harm so you can't do anything about it".

Its a tradition of Barnsley Football Club that fans, and its usually kids, run onto the field to pat the players on the back that they idolise.

Its a fantastic gesture and a thank you from the fans..........

The club directors and management should recognise that fact and celebrate in it

How fantastic a gesture it is indeed. Chasing the players off the field, not to be seen again.

"A thank you from the fans"?

Let me assure you it is not a thank you on my behalf. I would like to thank them the respectful way.

If it's technically trespassing then let's change the question: why doesn't the club invite the fans onto the pitch?

What harm does it actually do?

If you let them on after the players have done their lap then it's all good. If the fans run on first then just wait a while for them to calm down before bringing the players back out.

This asking the fans not to run out is pointless and makes the club look senile. Embrace it.

The club don't make themselves look bad, the idiots running on the pitch do. Why should the rest of the fans sit there patiently waiting for these morons to be removed from the pitch before showing their appreciation to the players?

The problem here is that the correct course of action ie people not coming on to the pitch, is never adhered to, and without a massive security presence, there is little likelihood that it ever will be - even though this is wrong.

I watched on TV the celebrations at a Scottish ground a few year ago, where they anticipated supporters coming on the pitch and, with a limited supply of stewards and police, created a cordon in the form of a rectangle in front of the team dugouts. The crowd went up to the cordon and stopped. The players then came out and walked within the cordoned area and it seemed to really work well. Exuberant supporters come on to the pitch in a controlled manner and players able to still come out and get the acclaim that they deserved. A win win brought about by common sense.

Rather than simply continuing to ask for something that is not going to happen, despite it being the legally correct thing, why not accept the reality of what is going to happen and with the involvement of the police, attempt to control it in a better way. I know it will not happen but it is so much better solution than what happens at the moment, and as mentioned above there is a precedent elsewhere.

I'd only advocate it on Saturday if we were assured of a play off place come full time. And even then I'd want everyone to leave and let the players thanks the fans for supporting them this season.

The problem is that our pondlife element will just run on and stay there, ignorant of the fact they're ******* things up for everyone else.
