why is today Black Friday, whats that all about then

I always used to call any Friday 13th black Friday , so why is today called it?

 

Asked the very same question earlier in the week. Kept getting e-mails advertising it and I'd never heard of it before. So I looked it up. It's an American thing that retailers are trying to start over here. I wish they'd **** off.

It's getting bigger and bigger each year here too - one "retail expert" predicts that within the next year or so it will be bigger than Boxing Day sales.

I was in the States this day last year and I've never seen anything like it. There were so many people in the shopping Mall we (stupidly) visited that the queue for the toilets was over half an hour long. Didn't take us long to get out and seek refuge in a bar over the road from the madness. I went back at 9pm and picked up some right bargains though when almost everyone else had gone home. It looked like a bomb had gone off in most of the shops.
