Why it should (and probably will be) Wilson.....

The club won't want to take a risk with another unproven manager from the lower leagues or appointed from within.

They will want someone with a proven track record who's had success (and i use the term broadly) with relatively little money.

They will struggle to appoint someone higher up the managerial ladder, especially with the club facing another relegation.

They want someone who if we do go down they will be confident of doing a god job in the division below.

They want someone who won't jump ship if we fail to stay up and who the fans would give time to and stick with if we go down.

They want someone who fans will, in the majority, rally behind and unite the club whilst if it is possible playing attractive football.

They want someone out of work who they can appoint on the spot and avoid paying compensation out to another club.

Wilson ticks all those boxes. He told the Chronicle a while ago he wouldn't rule out a return and there's been so much water under the bridge that id guess he's not so concerned about 'tarnishing his reputation' as he was in previous years where his name has come up. He also gets the chance to manage in the 2nd tier, something that he's not had chance to do recently. He'll always be the guy who took us to the Premiership, and a bad spell wont change that. A look at the list of other candidates isn't exactly enthusing. So unless they go down the route of trying to prise away a manager in the Terry Butcher mould, or appoint someone like Terry Phelan (inexperienced as a manager but bags of experience in other areas), then Wilson is clearly the number one choice.

He might fail to keep us up, he might fail in the division below and we might end up sacking him - but as a calculated risk (as all appointments are) there's no better option. And whilst they are at it, id suggest if he has no firm allegiance and he's ok with it, that they suggest Redfearn as his number 2. At least we will have the assurance as fans that they will both be pushing the players to their limit and not be accepting anything less than 100%. We might also get some beautiful football and some of those young lads getting games.

The timing hasn't been right before, but in my opinion the heavens have aligned and the time is now.

Agree with every word. When you lay it out like that, I can't see any other candidate in the frame. I am going to be really disappointed if it isn't DW now. It's all lined up for him. Just need to get him down to sign now.

Absolutely spot on. I couldn't have put it better myself.
Come on Mansford, get the approach made and get it sorted asap.
    Come home Danny.

And if we were to go down we have a ready made manager who knows what's required in the division and has a good record in it. A better chance of getting us out of it than many other candidates. Like i said, all appointments are risks but Wilson fits the bill. It seems the only reasons some people don't want him is because they don't want to spoil their (understandably) saintly view of him, or because "you should never go back". Which means bugger all when it was all of 17 (count 'em!) years ago.

I dont get disappointed by appointments (ok maybe Parkin!) but if he didnt get it i would be mildly annoyed! ;)

Agent Wilson - your job is done. Return to base. Repeat, return to base.

not for me personally, but there's worse options out there. i think anyone looking for a repeat of 96 are setting themselves, and wilson, up for a fall

Strikes me that this argument is completely without substance and is an emotional response rather than a logical one. I don't see any validity in it. It's akin to clubs having so called bogey sides - "we'll never win at xxxx, we never have". It's b0llocks - what happened 10 or 20 or 50 years ago has no bearing on a game of football today. In the same way, the fact that Wilson has been here before is completely irrelevant in my opinion. If he hadn't been here before, he would quite clearly be the stand out candidate.

I'm gonna be more than slightly annoyed, I'm gonna be real pissed off.!

I don't expect that to happen and that's not why his appointment makes sense.

    Who would you choose?

I don't think anyone who's sane is looking for a repeat of 96. I would be happy with a season or three of us being safe by Easter.

Agreed. I wouldnt have had him back before, purely because i didnt feel the timing was right. Too soon after leaving for Washday, he was doing well elsewhere etc.. but yes, i admit it would be great to see him stood on the touchline in that coat with Redders bellowing instructions whilst a rousing chorus of Wilson Wonderland erupts from the Ponte.

No crime in that, eh? ;)

    Sounds great! :)

God I am going to be disappointed if it isn't Wilson. Apart from anything else, if it isn't him this time, then I can't see him ever coming back. If now isn't deemed to be the right time, it never will be.

Id jump off the West Stand if Appleton gets it, but i cant see it. Only link seems to be Mansford was once his agent. Even that doesnt mean Mansford thinks he's any good - it just means he was his agent :)

Well you can never say never, but yes it would seem less likely than ever he'd come back. Besides, why wouldnt he want to manage in the Championship with a club he loves so much?

Of course it might not happen, but id be very surprised if it didnt.
