Have often wondered over the last few years that Barnsleyfc and different managers have built an entire squad in pre-season, mainly consisting of well established journeymen. Gudjohn did it when we came out of administration, Hart did it, Davey as done it, only one manager over the last 5 years as brought few players into the squad and come away with any success is one A Ritchie. Last years squad needed tweeking up, not culling, three or four quality players, and we would have had a good squad. Perhaps new managers hate the sight of players brought in by previous managers, they seem like irritable step-children, and need to be ignored and swept aside. Ipswich have brought in know-one, Palace only a couple of players. If and when Simon Davey goes to pastures new, will the next manager bring a whole squad in and cull the old journeymen, i think he may. Seems a popular trend to keep the shouting throng off the incoming Managers back.
Ritchie was already at the club before he was appointed manager, so he obviously knew what the players were about.
You want to win with your own players. Its the same when a chairman comes in and bins the manager a.s.a.p as they usually want their guy in charge to avoid allowing a previous admin to have any credit.
Mr Davey did have quite a few players out of contract Who would you have retained (assuming they did not have better offers elsewhere)? I'm not sure he really had a wholesale "cull" of quality players. Personally, I liked Kay & Austin because with those two, you have flexibility within the squad. The way Souza struggled to "fill in" yesterday, it's pretty clear that we have very few options at full back even now. Until Hassell is back, we haven't got anyone who can do a good job anywhere across the back four. Stephen
