If many billions of pounds can be found to keep banks in business and maintain the status quo, could it not be found to save millions of lives? One tenth of what the governments of the world have found they can muster in the last two weeks would end starvation across the globe. One billion would possibly be enough to supply clean water to those who do not have it. The moral cost of maintaining an economic structure that exists to keep greed and corruption in control is ours to bear. Do you really think that bailing out banks is right?
I think you have to strike a balance.
Whilst I think we could do a lot more to help the needy of the world you don't help the poor by becoming one of them.
The rescue package is probably something we can't afford but the alternative could be catastrophic. I'd like someone who knows a bit about this sort of thing to explain to me why the whole of financial services can't be nationalised. There'd be a lot more to go round then.
