Looking through Wigans results this season - they have lost to... Donny Blackpool Bury (4-0 in FA Cup) Port Vale Bury (2-1 in League Cup) Coventry Gillingham Burton They've also had draws against teams like Colchester (who put 3 past them), Crewe, Shef Utd, Peterborough. I know it'll be a hard game, but these guys aren't unbeatable - in fact whilst they score a lot they also tend to concede a few on occasion. I reckon with our away record defensively, we stand a chance and I'd have us as favorites for the playoffs still. In our hands.
Our away record since January 1 is Won 7 Drawn 3 Lost 1 with 14 goals scored against 4 conceded. We seem to be better playing away from Oakwell,
The stats are interesting ( ish )....in 2016 both team have scored identical points..47...2.41 ppg They have the best home record W8...we have the best away record W7. Points to a close game....if stats mean anything at all.
If they don't go all out, 100% effort to win this then they don't really want it much. I'm sure after a week of quiet reflection and motivational team talks they will be up and ready to go again. This is ONLY Wigan Athletic we are playing. It's not Barcelona. Obviously it will be a difficult match, and the short history of fixtures with them is against us, but it's our turn to win one. I haven't yet decided whether or not to go. The thing is that I have missed all these cracking away wins so I don't want to jinx it Chesterfield and Sheff Utd away plus the three away trips to Scunny - that's it for my away day season. Not a great record, so should I risk it? :nails:
Let's look at it this way: Wigan have won the league barring some crazy results on the last day, so whatever their manager says, they will not be on their top game, they'll be lifting the trophy at the end of the game and it'll be a celebratory atmosphere for them I'd like to think it would be a 1-5 v Oxford game for them but it won't be, they're not going to be drinking all week! Besides, we could still lose and get in the play-offs. Would Adkins want to lose to his old club and heap more pressure on him, even if it would stop us from getting in the play-offs? I can't see Gillingham beating Millwall but they might rest players for the play-offs. But at the end of the day if we win, we're in (unless United lose heavily). Anyone can beat anyone in this league and with our excellent away record there's no reason why we can't go there and win!
