PREMIERSHIP side Wigan Athletic are monitoring the future of Iron full-back Marcus Williams, the Telegraph can reveal.

Latics boss Chris Hutchings watched the 21-year-old defender complete 90 minutes during last night's Lincolnshire Cup clash at Sincil Bank.

Hutchings is in the market for a new left-back, with current first choice Leighton Baines looking likely to leave the JJB Stadium.

And Williams' future as a United player has been in doubt since June when he had a transfer request rejected by the club.

Championship rivals Barnsley made an initial enquiry about the player, before dropping their interest, leaving the door open for Wigan to make a bid before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.
