I think he will, but much depends on how he returns after the injury, and which club he joins.
If Newcastle ARE an option as reported today, then I think that would be a good fit for the lad. Wheras a Stoke or West Ham, would IMO see him waste away ala Hammill, Howard etc.
I wish him luck either way, been a delight to watch during his early career, and as the form of the team suggests since January, we miss him badly.
    At least we have Dagnall...

Hard to tell in this day and age YT a manager can sign him one day and get the sack the next, then its if his face fits with the new manager.

Hope it works out for him and also for Hammill, who maybe Wolves new managers cup of tea next season.

True mate, a hell of a lot of variables. But cant fault the lad for backing himself, and taking it on.
And as I say, we have Dagnall...

Cutting our cloth was always going to be difficult with regard to players and I just hope Hill can find some quality from somewhere for the start of next season and for him to be brave in introducing more youngsters if need be.

No I think he is leaving too soon and should stay and develop for a couple more years yet. Financially he will flourish but as a player I think he will stand still at best.

He played regular first team football in the championship for less than five months, so no. He will struggle to get a game in the premiership and needs another season at this level. If only to show a bit of loyalty to the club who gave him his last chance to make it in the game and who stood by him when the turd got himself done for drink driving.

He made 41 appearances last season 19 starts and 22 off the bench.

He started all the last 8 matches of last season.

    He's hadly 'flourished' with us

find it hard to remember a player whos reputation has been built on so little. A reasonable half season and suddenly some people are convinced he's Premiership class. Newcastle are linked only in his agents dreams, if he recovers sufficiently and gets fixed up on decent money, good luck to him, and more fool the club who pays it cos I've seen nowhere near enough from him to suggest he's make a top 6 Championship side never mind Newcastle. Not mobile enough, not quick enough, not physical enough, nowhere near enough energy and drive for the Prem.

Hill is spouting stuff like "the best young midfielder in the Championship" purely to talk up his value, he'll go down in Barnsley history as a reasonable prospect who overinflated his own abilities. The kid who's ripping it up at Blackpool (Phillips) is the one the Prem clubs will be chasing. Southampton is the most likely destination for Butterfield, and loaned to a Doncaster next October.

Unlikely as I think he's leaving too soon.

If he goes to a prem club I think he'll end up with skelfs in his arse at best, loaned out more likeley.

He might well make the top grade after some maturation but I can see a journeyman in the making. Probably make quite a bit of money in the next 3 years in any case.

Better to have another year of championship first team football under his belt...still he might triple his earning over 3 years at a mid range championship side.

IMHO if he was confindent of his ability he'd stay for another year.

Hey ho, they come they go. Most that think they are bettering their career seldom do.

Best of luck whilever we are not playing his team or he ends up at l**ds or pork of either shade in which case I hope he falls on his arse.

    On the plus side:
    1) geniune two footed player, very rare at any level.
    2) great vision and passer of the ball.
    3) can score goals from outside the box, set-pieces, and gets into great positions

    On the negative side:
    1)question on his stamina
2)question on his strength - can get pushed around.
    3)no pace.

So all his problems are physical in my opinion, it all depends whether he can compensate in other areas for his lack of physical assets - the big worry for me is pace, ok your going to tell me Paul Scholes isnt quick, but his stamina and strength aren't in question and I bet he's still quicker than Jacob.
He could be found out at the higher level, unless the team is built in a way which plays to his strength. I think its 50/50 whether he'll do well or not.

Give it a rest SM. You just can't stand to be wrong. There is a good reason why the season has taken a nosedive, and it's not Vaz Te, and definitely not Drinkwater. I know I'm not a proper fan, having only supported the club for 46 years, but it was only the prospect of watching Butterfield that caused me to renew for this season. A decision I feel was vindicated - best player we've seen at the club for years, and I guess we'll have to wait a long time to see another one anywhere near as good. I'm struggling big time to justify next season - particularly given the not so special offer that the club announced this week

he could do us a favour as darren barnard did for bristol city before we signed him and sign a contract with full knowledge he was on his way anyway

this is where a fair release clause could actually work in our favour, set it at 2million, tell butts he can go once someone offers that, avoid getting ripped off at tribunal,

I'd have put money on you responding like that

you've obviously made your mind up to defend him from any criticism, so you'll not accept the facts, but for the record, Butterfield went off against Leeds (prior to which he'd had a run of games where he'd been averate) and Vaz Te came on as sub. Which then coincided with us playing our best football and going on a run. Our form dipped when Drinkwater got injured in winning the penalty against Ipswich. We picked up again when he returned and then our season pretty much nose dived when Vaz Te and Drinkwater left in January.

Butterfield scored 4 goals in 5 games early in the season, was playing well, then his form dipped. I wouldnt even he's been that much of an influence on our season, and would put at least 4 players in front of him in the Player of the Season voting.

I'll renew my season ticket irrespective of which players represent the club because the club is bigger than any player. If Im wrong and Butterfield goes on to play Premiership football on a regular basis, feel free to bring this post back up.

I don't know why teams don't buy them but leave them at the club on loan for a period to develop, that's what I'd do with Buttrrfield if I was the likes of West Ham etc.

Add to that the fact that early on in the season he was relatively unknown by the opposition; as soon as he got noticed as to what he might be able to do opposition teams started to take account of it. I'm not sure if he is good enough to over come the additional attention.

just for clarification, even though he hasnt been much of an influence and has been in your words pretty average after a decent start, you would still have him in the top 5 players this season despite only playing 4 months of it ?
