Not half as much a ******** as the editor of the Daily Mail...then again, I guess that's to be expected given his job
In the world of Will Self all people who don't share his view on gay marriage are homophobic and all people who don't share his view on immigration are racist. He generally makes me very angry every time I hear him but he is excelling tonight. Peter Hitchens summed him up perfectly when he called him a liberal bigot.
Sanctimonious smug self-opinionated holier-than-thou I'm clever than you and I was addicted to smack penis
And what other explanation is there for being against gay marriage? I'm ok with the view to say that individual religions should be exempt, but they shouldn't complain when they are called homophobic. Although the term is misused, a phobia is an irrational fear, this is simply discrimination. Peter Hitchins actually criticised liberals for wanting equality! Why shouldn't gay people also be able to get married from the States point of view? As for the question on immigration, the figure is 13% born outside the UK....hardly the overruning some would have us believe.
Whenever I'm unsure of what to think I just simply consider what Peter Hitchens would say and do the exact opposite.
for the life of me can't understand how Hitchens gets the air time and column inces that he does, despise the bloke
He does come across as an insufferable *****, and your comment made me laugh, but he was right tonight about Will Self.
Some people oppose gay marriage on religious grounds and that is their right, it does not make them homophobic. Likewise you can hold a view that the last government made a complete mess of immigration and that control is required without being racist.
Peter Hitchens is as wrong on just about every subject as Christopher was right. I like to read his pieces every now and again though, always a good laugh. Yet to hear a logical reason why anybody not of faith would oppose gay marriage.
I like him, I find him funny, provocative and entertaining. Being a card carrying, touchy-feely Guardian reader I suppose I would ;-)
He is a totalitarian of Liberalism, which is why he invariably defeats his own arguments. He has got a lot to say and can be extremely funny I agree, but I would rather have Julie Birchall batting for me in a crisis.
Today's Independent "There are two Will Selfs: One is the louche, brainy one with the sythe-like tongue who annihilates his foes with words such as “ontological” while the other is the sullen, mean one who tries to make people look stupid. Similarly, there are two Peter Hitchens: The strident hammer of admittedly batty conservatism who gives no quarter and the bored, grumpy one who thinks he's above it all. As luck would have it, we got the first Will Self last night and although we didn't quite get the first Hitchens, at least we didn't get too much of the second one. And how did this all happen? Well, the brutal truth of the matter is that Self got to Hitchens, sometimes ****ily (“Take a chill pill, Peter!”), but mainly with skulking malevolence and by making sure that he never had the space to gain the initiative. Eventually Hitchens spat the dummy out and by the end of the show he was deep into I'm Not Going To Play Your Silly Bloody Games territory, a move that served only to reinforce the feeling that he'd been bested. I will give Hitchens this though: His accusation that the left is composed of “fat, bourgeoise, bohemians” who are only in it for the “cheap mayonnaise” certainly does raise some interesting question about how reasonable priced condiments intersect with communism." http://www.independent.co.uk/voices...-hitchens-keep-each-other-honest-8413925.html
I watched the show and as with some of the BFC match reports written by the national press I read that piece taken from today's independent and I'm left scratching my head and wondering if they watched the same programme as me.
Oh without a doubt, just felt it was relevant to the thread. I would stress that they're both sneery, full of their own self-importance, and belittling to others. I just tend to agree with the sneery lefty. I guess I just prefer my bigots to be bigoted against bigots
