My humble opinion With the squad we've got I think automatic promotion is beyond us. However, we can be a very resilient side that is extremely difficult to beat and even score against, as we've proved time and again by playing crap and winning. Because of this, I reckon one good signing who scores goals (I don't know who that could be) could make the difference. The play-offs are well within our grasp, but so is capitulation and a mid-table finish.
RE: My humble opinion Well i would agree about the need for another striker (like to think Scott Taylor would be that answer),i do feel though we have the quality to finish in the top two positions based on ability but no so sure on the quality of football we produce, having said that the tightest defence in the league must count for something come May.
No. We'll fade after Christmas and miss the play-offs. Next season is more realistic for us, I feel. With Ritchie a little more experienced, and having had additional time to bolster his squad, watch us go. I fear for us so much if we are promoted this time around.
I think its in our own hands. If GS were to allow us to bring in a quality defender and a striker there wouldnt be a lot stopping us really. Gordon over to you.
Neutrino... Why would you fear us going up?
I find that really silly. We'll be in a better position to bring in new and better players along with a bigger and more enthusiastic crowd.
It's win/win, even if we do just avoid relegation first year up.

RE: Neutrino... I look at that MASSIVE lot down the road; with far better crowds than we can ever hope to attract, yet, like us, penniless. That's what we'd be like. It'd be a constant battle against the odds to stay out of the bottom three. I wouldn't want that, not after all we've been through - to see all the optimism generated by a promotion dissipate because we're getting hammered every week. Much better to go up automatically and have a decent season of consolidation, in my view.
RE: Neutrino... It would be a very bad thing, after the initial delight and euphoria had subsided. What we need is to get the finances sorted, once and for all. Make sure we're at least breaking even, or turning a small profit. If we went up, it'd not be longing before fans wanted us to spend money we don't have in the hope of scraping survival. That wouldn't be conducive to a long-term future for our club. We've been there before.
All well and good, but You don't get a chance of promotion every season. At the end of the year we may lose Reid, Carbon, McPhail, Burns, Shuker and Devaney, get penuts for them which is absorbed by the debt of the club, so Ritchie is once again srabbling around the free transfers and we're left with a weaker team. The board put the prices up again, even fewer people attend, less money, downward spiral. If you've got a chance of promotion you do your best to take it.
RE: Neutrino... Dont you think Nardiello,Hayes,McPhail,Howard,Deveaney,Colgan,Flinders,Reid,Williams,Austin,Burns,Suker could play at a higher level? I think we would find it easier against better teams, given a little bit more space.
RE: All well and good, but This is true, Jay. If I thought we had a prayer of surviving in the Championship, my view might be different. It's correct to say that we'd be able to bring in additional players, but I feel that our financial state wouldn't allow us to sign sufficient quality to have a fighting chance. So what then? We go down to League One, saddled with players that our wage bill cannot accommodate due to lower attendances, and a depressed transfer market which reduces our chances of getting rid of them. For me, we are a couple of years short of being able to compete at a higher level. I look at our squad and wonder how many of those players will make the step up? Devaney? And? Ummmmmmm? Edit: I forgot about Howard.
i see what you are saying both you and jay make good points. but, i don't think there is that big a gap between league one and the championship myself.
**** me! Where's IoW tyke with his positive outlook for the day? I feel bloody depressed now! At the start of every season I'm optimistic that we can get promoted. We were saying on Tuesday night, that for the last couple of seasons when we've been mid/lower table we've thought "what do we need to get up there?", we've looked at top 6 sides coming to Oakwell and thought "what do they have that we don't?" and the answer really wasn't much, maybe a bit better organised, but this division is much of a muchness and no doubt fans of a few clubs have looked at us and thought "how come they are top 6?" It's highly unlikely that any side going up form this division would go up with a team capable of keeping them up, any side would need to strengthen, but you've more chance of retaining your decent players and bringing in better ones if you go up than stay down. The other week (Walsall game I think), they were announcing the team and I said to my mate "That sounds pretty good, first time for a few seasons that I've heard the line up and thought it sounded strong in almost every position" - i don't think we have a great team, we can play some utter tedium at times but I think we are in with as much of a shout as most teams, cause I've not seen anyone else that looks any better.
RE: **** me! The whole point of Neutrino's argument, and I'm sure he'll correct me if I'm wrong, isn't that we aren't able to gain promotion against the sides currently in League 1 but that we wouldn't be able to hold our own against the sides in The Championship, or whatever it might be called next season. That's how we have to measure ourselves, against championship sides. Personally I think his argument is a valid one.
