Ill get mi tin foil hat ready.. but from what I saw last season he could just about cut it in League 1 defensively. But his distribution, it was like he was always trying to pass to someone in the crowd. I'm glad he found another club and i hope he succeeds. With White i think he'd be best as a wingback with someone covering the left side of defence. I really hope we can find a decent LB before the big kickoff.
George Williams was the best full back in League 1. Tremendous defensivley, put in 150% every game and could play on either side. Still mortified we let him go, regardless of how good Aidy White is.
You're entitled to your opinion, and I respect it. But I couldn't disagree more. For me he was one of the few players I am convinced that could make the step up to the championship. He's a right side defender after all, and for me was some distance ahead of Bree in terms of development. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
I thought he was outstanding, all things considered. I look forward to seeing how he gets on back at 'his' club. With the manager who released him.
I think there's no doubt that if he was injury-free, White is a better player. But Williams' work rate and ability was fantastic and it's still bizarre that we let him go. Also the fact that he worked hard to get in the first team having seemingly been cast out, then impressing Johnson enough to get back in the first team, a chance which he grasped with both hands, also helped to ingratiate himself with us.
I think he would have been a great back up for the championship. If he'd have got a break in the team his coming season then who knows, he might have thrived like last year. Disappointed we let him go. Think he'd have been a reserve, but we're going to sign other full backs that are unknown quantities now so seems silly Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
But he needed to sign the contract to continue playing for us and he chose not to. That is why we are looking elsewhere. Shame really.
I loved G Williams but I agree his distribution needed work. I also thought he offered little as an attacking threat. But defensively he was so so solid and dependable. Plus he seemed to have that natural footballing ability that Bobby Hassell had, a knack for being able to deal with situations naturally without panicking. I have doubts as to whether he's got the pace to start every week in the Championship, but as a versatile full back who could cover both sides and was solid, he was perfect. The fact that we are now looking at trying to bring in a versatile full back and will possibly have to pay for one, one who could well be unproven, makes his departure all the more ridiculous.
Behave. Not even best in the last 5 years. Stones & Golbourne were both better. As were Trippier & Hassell before that.
George Williams was a bloody good defender though. Is it open season for criticising current and former players?
