I'm been updating Windows 10 on my 2011 laptop for the last 48 hours. I'm currently updating the updates so the updated updater program can update the out of date updates which the out of date updater program did not update. Won't be long now.
Didn't have to re-install any apps, that bit worked perfectly. The problem was that it's a HP laptop which was pre-loaded with HP software which was incompatible with Windows 10. HP ProtectTools Security Manager, basically. However, this cannot be uninstalled in the usual way, you have to uninstall it manually, and delve into the registry to delete hundreds (literally) of entries. That took 36 hours, including several failed 3GB downloads. Just about got it going, although it has annoying habit of cutting off typing in the middle o
I've gone to windows 10. Had it a month or so. All apps and programs work OK. Once you've got it, if things don't work great you can do a clean install of the operating system and manually re-install your apps. Unlike almost the entire world, I thought Windows 8.1 was a fantastic operating system. Took me about half an hour to fully understand it. Everything worked, it was just a joy. I couldn't understand what the problem people had got with it. Conversely, Windows 10 is bugging the hell out of me. I can't get it to do what I want it to do. It does things I don't want it to do and I've no control in that. I've tried to like it, but it's doing my nut in.
You lucky bu**er, mine only took 3 weeks and over 24 hours on the phone to Microsoft engineers in India ... Mind you they did give me office free for all the c*ck ups !!!!!
My advice to anyone who has installed Windows 10 is to go into Settings\Privacy and check that the selected options are what you would wish them to be.
