As this is so cheap just now would it be worth buying? I currently have XP as never fancied Vista. If I were to get it would lots of programs not be able to function correctly, and also hardware?</p>

    Cheers for any advice.

    On the same subject

I've got Vista, not had any issues with it - what would be the benefits of switching to Windows 7?

Only Windows 7 mate? When I go on You Tube it mentions how my browser IE7 is being phased out by them soon and then gives me three options to upgrade to. Windows 8, Google Chrome and Firefox 3.5. I've not decided which one to go for yet.

The final release version isn't due out till October. there are beta versions avaiable to try for free but the final release will be out soon. You can purchase Vista now and get a free upgrade when it is final

Have used it for a few months in Beta. It is what Vista should have been,,,,,, ie it works. looks good and doesn't get right on your tit always asking what to do next lol

Worth pre ordering though at the price it is at Currys and PC world for now.

RE: Windows 7 - be careful

The new release comes with no web browser. You will need to download a web browser onto a memory stick or cd before you install it or you will not be accessing the internet for a while. check the small print.

That said, i have heard a lot of good things about it

It offers a few improvements and some things for the future

Fancy touch-screen ideas and suchlike I think will shape the future of PC's to some extent. However, the main thing is it is so much more streamlined, getting better performance using less resources. It has new neat ways of organising files in "libraries". As well as the directory system, any file in any folder on any fixed drive can be added to a library. Say, if you made a library called "Photos", you could add all the photos dotted about your PC to it and access them all in a double click.

Whether an upgrade is any use to you depends l guess on what you use your PC for. If Vista suits your needs there's no rush. It will be supported by MS for years to come. XP, however, I think they will be keener to finally kill off as it dates back to 2001 and once security updates stop, it's time to upgrade so XP users have some incentive.

Anyone considering buying Windows 7 for their exisiting PC during the current offer would be well served to get their skates on and test the release candidate.
If you know how to set up a virtual machine to run it without having to wipe off your current OS, this is a great starting point. You can then test if your favourite software works and get some idea about hardware compatibility.

If anyone is keen to try it (and has a Windows Live ID and 20GB or so of free hard drive space) I have a step-by-step article from a magazine of how to set up a freeware virtual machine and install Windows 7 to it. I'll scan it in and post it if anyone's bothered. You can even do it out of Linux. I'm currently running Windows 7 RC that way and it works a treat. Doesn't offer enough to me to drag me back to the Windows fold though.

    User Access Control

Turn it up to full. Then it will get tit on and ask you what to do all the time more like Vista.
The default UAC setting has already been breached and remote code execution is very easy. MS have stated they do not intend to fix this in time for the October release and once deployment is wider I think malicious code attacks will be rife.

As for buying Vista with free upgrade coupon, yes you can do that but Vista Home Premium retails at twice the current asking price for 7!

Yep, same across the board all the versions

Some versions don't have media player either. neither is such a great loss really. but while its £45 its worth getting one,,,,,, more so for those allegedly running copies of XP LOL

    Dreamboy...

its offering an upgrade to IE8 not Windows8 - Windows 7 is the new OS from Microsoft to replace Vista, Windows 8 does not exisit (yet). IE8, Chrome Firefox etc.. are all web browsers, your IE7 won't be phased out for a while yet and if u have a legit copy of Windows Vista/XP you should recieve IE8 in your free downloads sometime soon.
