Just heard Matt Hancock saying the promising Pfizer vaccine needs to be stored at a temperature of around minus 80 until the latest stage possible in the point of use (Max 24 hours). That's gonna chill the bloodstream down haha. Make sure you take your big coat. You will know who has had it, cos they will look like this.
Half of the 43k trial had placebos, so not quite. In all seriousness though. How many GP facilities can store something at -80 degrees? It's gonna require a massive infrastructure project IMO.
Liquid Nitrogen is fairly common at doctors for cryotherapy - treatment of warts, non-cancerous skin lesions, etc and is quite a bit colder than -80.
Looks like they’re going to look at using sports halls and places like that which would be a good idea rather than huddling everyone into small doctors waiting rooms. Would be like at school when you had to queue up for your meningitis jabs.
It takes a lot of energy to store something at -80 too. The freezers would make the facility quite hot.
It's actually not that difficult, dry ice (CO2) is -78C, just need a few 70s stadium rock bands to rock up with their stage gear....
Yes, that is my worry, because anything that requires planning and competence isn't exactly a strong point of this government. Maybe all the doses can be stored at Boundary Park. Pretty sure -80 degrees is a high temperature there.
Good job Ice Cream man Rossi only got 18 months jail time back in 2001, His vans can hit the road along with Mr Whippy and supply a shot of anti covid with every 99. I expect that to be top of the options for the government.
I’m sure they’ll be a least 1Tory MP out there who has already been sounded out with ‘connections’ to a company who can provide said facilities
A few portastore containers up on the top pitch of what used to be Holgate playing fields would have been perfect. I am sure, it was around that temperature in Jan-Feb from my memories of being banished up there for double period games' when the wind was howling and rain lashing down. And don't get me started on the annual X country with only thin athletic vests and shorts in driving snow with teachers watching on with woolly hats scarves gloves sheepskin coats boots and cups of hot coffee bovril etc. As they watched us going round you could actually hear them as you went past complaining about how cold it was. Sadistic barstewards... Character building my ar*e (not that I am bitter like!)
There's tonnes of stuff in this world to be worried about without focusing on how to store vaccines. I'd leave it to the scientists etc to work out. I'm sure nobody has even considered vaccine storage temps before last week so I wouldn't recommend adding it to a list of stuff to worry about
There used to he a small kid in our year who was brilliant at cross country and always finished in the top 5 in the annual race.. One year, despite heavy snowfall, the race still went ahead. The snow had drifted in the gulley leading up to Siberia and was about 5 feet deep. This kid was leading and went hurtling into the gulley only to get marooned up to his neck halfway through. I passed him as he struggled to wade through, the only time I got anywhere near him in the school cross country.
I was a skinny wimp who, come the annual cross country, used to walk round at the back with all the nerds and overweight lads. We used to have a 'rehearsal run' for the years a couple of weeks before the actual school cross country. When I was in the 4th year (I think it was) it was cold, and for some reason I decided to run round. In spite of being about seven and a half stone wet through, and all legs (standard joke was... Oi!! You've got two thread hanging down from your short...Oh! my mistake...they're your legs) Nevertheless, I was pathetically unathletic but on that one day, for some bizarre reason, seemed to be able to run without collapsing in a breathless heap after about 150 metres. In fact I found running that day so easy I was in sight of the winner at the finish and even raced the lad for sixth place at the finish even though I lost out in the sprint for the line. The biggest 'downer' though was that Eric Goodman who was head of sports at the time and knew of my 'wimp' reputation having seen evidence of it many times in the gym, who pulled me to one side and accused me of cheating by hiding at the top near the greenhouses for a lap (I know some often tried that tactic ) and only doing one of the two laps. The git made me do an extra lap!!
