I'd be really grateful if anyone can recommend a provider- I think that Tiscali is the cheapest deal, but is it fast and reliable. I live in old town so pretty central if that makes any difference to the connection.

    Cheers in advance tarnfolk

    I am on Tiscali

When its working its fine - mine has been OK for the last year or so

If there is any prioblem though the technical support is a level below abysmal

Had a problem a couple of years ago and it took a lot of effort to get past the call centre in India to an engineer who was able to quickly fix the fault in the exchange -getting past the call centre was a nighmare though and took several strongly worded emails

    Cheers lads.

That's what I was worried about- a problem with the exchange and a call centre abroad. I had this experience with Talk Talk, who I'll say, have the worst customer service I've ever experienced. Shocking. I spent hours of my life calling them

I pay £5 per month for SKY broadband

They tell me the free service is not available in my area (Dodworth). What is going on?

I've had no end of problems with Tiscali

and they have virtually no customer service. They're cheap for a reason and there's a reason they're cheap.

RE: I pay £5 per month for SKY broadband

When I took it out they told me it would be free after about 3 months. That was about 18 months ago. When I enter my post code on their website it says it is available in my area but when I phone up it isn't.

As soon as I am convinced that these mobile wireless internet things work properly, I'm having one. My Sky box drops out and needs rebooting about 6 times a day - it really is not a very good service and nowhere near as fast as they claim.

    In their defence

I think I am a bit far from the exchange - hence the reason for being interested in the mobile thingy

Depends how far you are from the mobile site

Would you get a mobile dongle from the same people that give you mobile coverage. If so how strong is the signal?

RE: Depends how far you are from the mobile site

It is not so much the speed that's the issue with Sky, it's the fact that it keeps dropping out. Most of the time that is just a pain, but sometimes (like doing on-line banking for example) it could have undesired results.

My mobile signal (Vodafone) is fine where I live, and I am not really bothered if the service is patchy on the move as any type of connection is better than nothing.

I made a fuss about my connection a few weeks ago and they said they would "fiddle" with it but I've been out of the country since and can't comment until I get back.

I will wait a bit longer as I think you mentioned before that the service is a bit dodgy at the moment.

The point being that mobile broadband uses the same connection and netowrk as a mobile phone

So if thats patchy for calls it will be shocking as a modem. Only with really good signal is mobile broadband fixed line comparable currently

    I'm in Germany now

But I'll check when I get home - not really paid much attention up to now, but I take your point it makes perfect sense.
