My young un is trying to get a wireless network connected to Telewest Broadband. He has the router and a card that goes in the side of the laptopp (which already has a wireless connection i think) It picks up a network but can he buggery get the thing to go online, Now,,,,,,, in the instructions it tells you to connect with a NIC lead first, is this a must..... cos i can't think of anything else to do. I think he installed it arsehole upwards and never read the instructions,,,,,,,,,,, any help would be gratefully received
yer a good un if yer can get it to work,my hubbys been trying for ages without any joy infact we ended up without any internet at all at one stage.
It is a must if I remember rightly Telewest will only let you connect with a registered MAC address. If he can connect to the internet by wiring the PC direct to the cable modem, his MAC address is registered. Do a command prompt and type ipconfig /all Write down the hex after "Physical address". Connect wired to the router and open Internet explorer. type http://192.168.0.1 in the address bar and it'll start up the router's setup utility. Somewhere in setup (RTFM) it'll tell you how to manually set the MAC address for the router. Make it the same as the PC which can connect. While you're there, check the wireless access point on the router is enabled - I could pick up a network before I enabled mine and was head-scratching as to why my connection kept dropping - I was connecting to some bloke's network 2 streets away! Then log out of the router's setup utility and run XP's network setup wizard. He should then be able to make wired connection. Now disconnect the wires and try wireless. It should now work. But as ever, don't blame me it it doesn't.
i got a router setup just like your sons, working perfectly. On blueyonder too. Also got a server setup behind my router. But shhhhh.
