Quite a feather in the cap to say that you gave the most expensive in the history of the game such a torrid time that he was substituted at half time!! Poor Gareth just couldn't deal with Disco that day at Oakwell!

I went to the away game that season and remember saying how he made Bale, the next big talent, look extremely ordinary. He looked great going forward but could not defend to save his life so Soton and Spurs used him the right position since then. And he has gone on to be a top, top player since then so fair play to him. Disco must be loving it though!

To be fair Bale was an inexperienced teen kid back then with barely a game to his name. It's not like when Martin Bullock made a fool of Sol Campbell.

It makes you realise, though, what an amazing talent was Disco. He could work magic with his feet when on song, but he just seemed to hide the talent for long spells within games, or even longer. Never mind the potential of Bale, what about the unrealised potential of Devaney? Last heard of at Kidderminster Harriers. A long way from the Bernabau.

Good point. He was the stereotypical winger in that he blew hot and cold, would have a blinder one week and then do nothing the next. Great servant for us though.

I suppose it shows just how hard Bale has worked to get where he is today, too.
