    in the group stages, if teams finish on equal points with the same goal difference and with the same number of goals scored, how do they decide who goes through?

    If 2 or more teams are equal on points then the following applies in order:

    1) points in matches between the teams concerned.
    2) goal diff in matches between the teams concerned. (remember there may be 3 teams involved)
    3) goals scored in matches between the teams concerned.
    4) goal diff in all matches
    5) goals scored in all matches
    6) draw lots!!

    I think the bird off idea is best though.
