David Weir is set to agree the termination of his playing contract with Rangers, STV understands.

The 41-year-old, who has won the last three SPL championships with the club, will now look to continue his playing career in England..

Weir has failed to break into Ally McCoist’s side this campaign, mainly due to the partnership formed between summer defensive recruits Dorin Goian and Carlos Bocanegra, and has made just one appearance this season.

The club captain, who has also won 69 caps for Scotland, had previously admitted that he may have to look elsewhere for playing time in the January window, if he failed to win back his place in the team.

“My priority is playing and, as it stands, I want to play for Rangers,” he told STV in November.

“If that doesn’t happen, you’ve got to get the message and start looking elsewhere.”

Weir has made a total of 231 appearances for Rangers, after joining on a free transfer from Everton in 2006.

Crikey I thought he'd retired when he left Everton!

Obviously not seen him play recently, but he was never the quickest and you've got to assume if he's no longer considered fit/mobile enough to play in Scotland, then he's probably not able to cope with League 2 football, let alone the Championship.

A good brain can only make up for so much in the way of physical fitness, and this league is full of quick and powerful forwards.
