Sheffield United going from strength to strength. New extension to stands buying Barnsleys best player etc etc etc. They think its only natural that Barnsleys best player should want to come to Bramall Lane.

Even Wednesday look down their noses at us and they are £30 million in the red. But they are also looking to get millions pumped into the club from foreign investors to make it a super club which they think they are.

Anybody that knows supporters from either Sheffield club will testify that they dont even look at Barnsley as competition they just dont think we belong in the same league.

    Well ???

A questions been asked............will we ever be able to compete ??

I personally think the Sheffield clubs are so far in front now that it would take years of Barnsley success to get near them. And that includes Sheffield Wednesday.

Remember, when Adrian Heath had his last match in charge of Sheffield United a few years ago there were (if I remember right) between 10 to 11 thousand at Bramhall Lane that day. How things have changed.

    lighten up a bit............

things are as they are-it would take a massive massive investment over the next five years -credit crunch notwithstanding-to get us anywhere near where Sheff U are-we simply have to cut our cloth accordingly and you need to stop feeling so bad about it</p>

given our parlous financial state I think we have done extremely well to survive in this division as long as we have-largely due to SD's first 2 seasons</p>

    I always...

... look to finish higher than the "big three" in Yorkshire, even though we are handicapped not being a "big city" club.

Sad thing is, you could probably count on hand the times we have achieved it.

Even last season, when we were above the Fowls for so long, they managed to pip us on the last day.

What you should remember is - we are competing with the Sheffield clubs ! we are in the same league as them ! we may not be as financially strong as them (Fowls excepted), but we aren't that far behind them !

It's probably right that they don't look at us as rivals, but it's great when we stick it up 'em (neer)

I think given the credit crunch, millionaire investors will be thin on the ground.

It's time to batten the hatches and weather the storm. I'd be surprised to see anybody putting money into the fowls at the moment. They would be advised to keep it <strike>in a bank account</strike> under the mattress.

Blame - The People of Barnsley for that!!

Sheffield has a population of about 500,000 and has 2 clubs who average around 25,000 each. We have a population of around 250,000 with one club and can only average around half of that.
Don't blame the club - BFC crowds have been poor through thick & thin.

Rubbish. You obviously know nothing about the late 70s/early 80s when it comes to attendances.

I moved from Yorkshire, and I'm certain that SWFC had a buyer around that time who wanted to sell the training graound, reduce the debt and make them into the biggest club in europe. they were told to get fecked about turning the training ground into housing, at which point they lost interest. Every buyer since then sems to have got to the same stage, and when told they can't build houses on the training pitch they lose interest. Spot a theme? People see them as a club with big assests that can be exploited and then sold on for minmal investment and no further assets. Was asked in all seriousness by a fan down here last weekend about the latest takeover. I repeated what I'd read on here about newspapers looking into it and his reply? --- thought as much!! Are we smaller than the Sheffield clubs, United yes Wednesday, possibly not, smaller crowds but a lot less debt. Sheffield 500,000 2 teams 25,000 each per game, Aprox 5% of population, Barnsley 250,000, 1 team 11,000 per home game 4.4% of population. Its not too far different.

The only person who has ever mentioned selling the training ground was Dave Allen, the Wednesday chairman at the time. No other potential buyer has ever mentioned this as being key to the deal. There is no theme. You've posted a lot of speculation and nonsense as fact. Yes, we're all very frustrated about the lack of progress regarding some capital investment in the club, and are happy to acknowledge that we are going nowhere until this does happen. However, we can still pay the bills, keep the Co-op happy and are producing a string of quality players out of our Academy (something that the much vaunted Academy at the Lane has so far failed to achieve) so it's not all bad. Are you Barnsley smaller than the Sheffield clubs? I'd say definitely, but does it matter? Probably not.

Fairly certain that i've seen it reported( I know could be press speculation) that planning permission has been turned down on more than one occasion. I don't know the ins and outs of the history of the club or how long Allen has been there. He could have been there longer or less time than I have remembered, but I'm certain I took the piss out of a mate who supported back in 93 when the council veto'd a redevelopment of the training ground plan, presumably from the chairman at the time.

RE: Blame - The People of Barnsley for that!!

Oh yes the 3-4 years under Clarkey & Hunter, waht about the other 100 odd years? What about promotion season under Wilson 8,500? What about last season and all the w@nkers putting their Man U shirts aside for a couple of weeks while we played Chelsea & went to Wembley.

We don't compete with the Sheffield Clubs or in this division because not enough Barnsley citizens turn up at Oakwell...end of.

Also the lad who posted after you got his maths wrong 500,000 Sheffielders, 50,000 going to watch the 2 clubs = 10% of their population, Barnsley 250,000 people - 12,500 = about 5%.

He's right to a certain extent

I work with Blades and Fowls, they both think we are a laughing stock, pretty much the same way we look at the likes of Rotherham.

They think our ground is **** and our support is too. Our biggest home attendances are always Sheff Weds and Sheff Utd.

I think he meant that 5% of the population of Sh1tfield watch their own team, Washday or Blunts, similar figure to Barnsley.
