Alright folks We're pestering you all again & decided to do a one off, special edition Wembley edition of WSB. We're looking for people to contribute their memories of either of our last two visits and we're trying to get hold of some of the more notable players to have laiked in either game. If you want to contribute, let me know.
Here's mine if you want it 2000. It was a long day, I live in Swadlincote, South Derbyshire so the day started with me driving North to Bolton-on-Dearne to pick up my 80-year old dad (long-time Reds supporter from the 1930s). We then headed to Oakwell to get on one of the Wembley coaches. On the approach to the stadium I remember seeing hoards of Red and Blue dressed fans outside the many pubs, all standing together. On arrival, we walked out of the bus shed and the first person we saw was Dicky Bird, talking to anyone who would talk to him. We were hungry so we got some fish and chips from one of the many stalls outside the ground. They must have been made of solid gold judging by the price. We sat down on some steps to eat them when Michael Parkinson walked past – so that’s a full set of Barnsley Celebs in just 10 minutes. We took our seats only to find that we were on the very front row behind the goals. We were actually sitting below pitch level and had to sit up straight to see anything much at all. My one memory of the game was Hristov’s point-blank header (right in front of us) that should have made it 3-3 and the subsequent 4th goal for Ipswich. My feeling at the end was that we’d thrown away a golden opportunity (missed penalty and that save) it had been a pretty even game but one we should have won. The journey back (Coach to Barnsley, dad to Bolton and then 70 miles back down the M1) seemed to take forever and I was totally shattered when I finally got home. Hell of a day.
