From Birmingham Mail: West Bromwich Albion loanee Luke Steele faces FA Cup heartache Mar 14 2008 LUKE Steele faces Wembley heartache with Barnsley unwilling to sign him on a free transfer. The keeper's loan ends today and he could face returning to Albion and missing the FA CUP semi-final against Cardiff. "It is a concern for the player and it is sad that Luke is in the middle of it all", said Mowbray. "The stance our club is taking is the right one and we do not want to be the fool. "It would be strange if Luke watches that semi-final whilst on loan elsewhere. "This is the last day of his loan and hopefully it will get resolved for the benefit of the player. "We are happy to let him go on a free transfer. We are offering them a pretty attractive deal. "Luke wants first team football and if he comes back he will be third choice, but at the minute it does not look like something they want to take up. "We are not asking for a fee but there is a hold-up. I find it difficult to understand where they are coming from. "We have been subsidising Luke's wages quite considerably but the deal on the table is a very good one for Barnsley. Luke has played a good part in their Cup run which has made them a lot of money. It makes sense. "The boy has a transfer value now - but we are not asking for anything. If he comes back it will be a shame for the boy."
Maybe to do with this bit of the report. "We have been subsidising Luke's wages quite considerably but the deal on the table is a very good one for Barnsley. Luke has played a good part in their Cup run which has made them a lot of money. It makes sense. "
Not sure how that works - we are outside the transfer window Sounds like WBA are asking us to pick up all the remaining wages to continue the loan until we can sign him officially, rather than subsidising like they are currently doing Not sure how transfer agreements work outside the transfer windows though
this is a joke surely?! WTF would we not sign him on a fee. this makes no logical sense and must be Mowbray taking the piss or not knowing full facts. we can not lose out....
thats ridiculous!!! Is it because we dont want to pay his wages from now till end of season? yet they are already planning on squandering money on building a stand to stand empty!
There was a bit in the Daily Star yesterday that said WBA were happy to let him go but we had to pay all his wages for the rest of this season and then agree to sign him on a free transfer after that.
It might be the promise to buy him - Muller coming back etc.
imho though Steele's a better keeper than Muller.

You can see their point though Why agree to sign a young, class goalkeeper on a free transfer when we could use the millions of pounds he's helped the club earn on a Danish striker, who we never play, or a Peruvian forward who we've sent back home. If he's not here after the weekend someone at the club deserves a thick ear.
I suppose that given..................... Davey doesn't like sub goalies then Steele might have reservations about coming here to rot on the bench instead of at the Hawthorns
Then why sign him on a free then if this is the situation next season we can sell him for a fee and get our money back. If folk think the Muller is worth a million and that Luke is a better goalkeeper then cash in on Muller and get a reserve keeper who is willing to warm the bench. Short sighted in my opinion therefore there must be more to it
