Man 'critical' after police crash A man remains in a critical condition in hospital after two people were hit by a police car in South Yorkshire. The man and woman were with people talking to officers from another force when the crash happened on Wakefield Road, Barnsley, early on Sunday. The woman was treated for leg injuries. Police were not involved in a pursuit at the time of the crash. The police driver is not facing action, but that will be reviewed as the investigation progresses, said police. The Independent Police Complaints Commission had been informed. Inspector Michael Green of West Yorkshire Police said West Yorkshire officers were talking to the group when the two people were hit by the police patrol car. Insp Green said: " West Yorkshire Police officers in a marked police vehicle were carrying out routine inquiries with a group of people on Wakefield Road, in Barnsley, when an unconnected South Yorkshire Police marked vehicle, travelling in the direction of Wakefield, was in collision with two members of the group. "A male adult received serious head and leg injuries and his condition is regarded as critical. "A female adult sustained non-life threatening leg injuries." Investigation The A61 Wakefield Road was closed and West Yorkshire Police's Professional Standards Department was investigating the incident. Insp Green added: "Neither police vehicles - the West Yorkshire Police vehicle which was stationary or the South Yorkshire Police vehicle which was in collision with the two persons - was involved in any pursuit. The incident happened in the Staincross area of Barnsley, which is close to the South Yorkshire - West Yorkshire
Heard it earlier on the news. You would have thought if the people were in a conversation with the police that they would have been somewhere safe, so it really is puzzling how they have been hit.
