    Been to Madeira twice. Lovely spot. If you haven't been before don't look down when the plane is landing. Seems to be landing in the sea until right at the last second or two it finds tarmac

    We head out to Lanzarote on Boxing day for a week until new years day. Love Christmas at home then skipping the country for the dead week between christmas and new year for a bit of winter warmth. Done Madeira 3 years on the bounce so time for a change. Madeira is lovely though at this time of year, they make a proper good job of christmas and the new years eve fireworks on the harbour are spectacular.

    Madeira airport ranked about no 6 or 7 on most dangerous airports in the world list. Because the airport is basically chiselled out of the cliff edge, there a cliff on one side and the sea on the other. The cross winds are hairy. Shuts to incoming flights at least once a month because of the winds. There are some great vids on youtube of flights battling to come in when its windy. It also used to have one of the shortest runways in the world with a drop straight into the sea but its not so bad since they extended it out on stilts.

    I'm in Thailand right now and it's awesome and empty - they've been hit by the Russian downturn really badly, and next year isn't likely to pick up either - I reckon there will be some absolute bargain packages about, especially if you can travel before the school holidays start.

    Only 34 deg here, 24 currently at 9:20pm. Best place I've ever been to, in Montego Bay. Most relaxed place and people I've ever known.
