Barnsley caretaker manager Simon Davey was pleased with his players' commitment after they bounced back from defeat at QPR on Saturday to beat Burnley and move five points clear of third-bottom club Hull City.
The winner came in the 30th minute of an end-to-end first half. Martin Devaney picked up a loose ball in the middle of the park and played a delightful one-two with striker Paul Hayes before taking a return ball to slide his shot past Brian Jensen.
Davey said: "It was a tough game, we got the goal when we needed to. We were unlucky not to put more away.
"It was a hard-fought game and we deserved to win it. We got away with the right result after a poor performance. The commitment from the players was fantastic."
He added of Devaney: "It's always good when a player comes in and gives you a goal like that. I am pleased for him."
Lowly Tykes had struck the woodwork twice before Devaney scored. Steve Cotterill's side dominated a less entertaining second period but were unable to create clear-cut chances as Barnsley held on to claim a deserved win at Oakwell.
Both sides were in desperate need of maximum points after enduring four-match winless streaks.
Such woeful form left Davey's side hovering just two points above the drop zone at the start of play, while Burnley's early season promotion push was in danger of falling apart with the Clarets ninth at kick-off.
Barnsley went within a whisker of opening the scoring when Grant McCann's beautifully curled left--footer from the edge of the area bounced back off the bar.
An exciting spell saw goalkeepers Jensen and Nick Colgan called into action on several occasions, but it was the home side who were left to rue their luck for the second time as Sam Togwell's powerful 30-yard effort hit a post.
Barnsley then took the lead but Stephen Foster had Burnley's best chance of the opening half seconds later as his header from Wade Elliott's corner hit the woodwork.
Both sides continued to push, with the home team looking most likely to add to the scoresheet, but the visitors emerged from the interval looking brightest and Kyle Lafferty should have done better than head tamely over from 10 yards.
Barnsley battled to hold on to their slim lead, with both Gifton Noel-Williams and Steve Jones seeing efforts blocked by pumped-up Tykes defenders.
Burnley continued to push but James O'Connor was again denied by last ditch tackling and Kyle Reid almost made it two moments later when he found himself well-placed in the box, but Jensen was able to parry his effort to safety.
The Clarets tried desperately to find an equaliser but without any conviction.
