Went there earlier today to get Birthday gift for sister-in -law - an annual parking pass.

To get an annual parking pass you have to become a 'Friend' at £30 pa and then buy the pass for £50.
Not sure why someone has to become a 'Friend' to get a parking pass.

Anyway handed over £80 CASH only to be told that because it was a cash transaction as opposed to Card Payment I would have to pay £85 -
Anyone come across something similar elsewhere -

Never heard of having to pay more for a cash transaction than a card transaction. That's bizarre. The landlord in my local encourages people to take cashback when making card payments to cover the cost of card transactions. Drunk people never understand when he gets a bit desperate and tries to explain they're doing their bit for the community pub etc. In your case I don't think you should ever have to pay more (effectively be penalised) for paying in cash, especially when some ATMs now charge for the privilege of withdrawing your own cash. One thing that always makes me chuckle are those machines that say 'free balance enquiries here'. Very generous.

Its highly unusual. All I can think is that they have to pay the banking related charges for cash so they pass it on to the customer.

I was at the Sculpture Park with my wife, sister and hubby recently. Couldn't believe how expensive it was.
Does the £85 include parking everytime you attend Red-Taff, or do you have to pay for that separetly.?

Brother-in- law is a Mackem, but like me, my Sis was born in Doncaster. They live in Walsall. Sis is proud
that she's from Yorkshire and loves nothing more than to visit the many places of interest so the Sculpture Park
is a must whenever they are up North. Her favourite place is Cannon Hall. They are always impressed with the
good value that it offers whenever we visit there.

Yes I’ve come across something like that.
    The Earth Centre at Conisborough.
Pay at the gate - which gave you nothing but entry into the site - once in you had to pay every step of the way.
Obviously the same business model at Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
    So expect the same eventualities.

He isn't talking about having to pay for parking. His post is about paying extra for using cash

    Love the sculpture park

there’s plenty of free parking around too if you object to paying their prices. That said it is free to get in....

The Sculpture Park is a brilliant place.
The £80 + £5 ! is the cost of a 12 month parking permit - can visit as often as you like but think the one-off payment for parking is expensive - £3.50 per hour.
All the galleries exhibitions etc. are free of charge so that 'foot visitors' pay nothing.

I had also bought sister-in-law a lithograph (Joan Miro) a few days earlier and paid cash for that - no problem or extra charge.
(I have e-mailed the YSP re this extra charge,)

but I don't object paying their price - £80 p.a. is o.k. for someone who will be visiting at least once a week. What I am querying is the extra £5 because it's a cash payment.

completely different model at YSP - at the YSP all galleries/exhibitions are free. 'Foot' visitors pay nothing -
Don't object to cost of parking pass - my whinge is about paying extra for a CASH transaction.

The fee for the parking pass if you are a regular visitor makes sense. We were there around five hours and didn't manage to see everything, so next time they are this way, my folks will no doubt be going again. During the day, I can't remember what we spent on food, drink and items from the shop, but I would guess that between us we spent around £60 and we were charged £12 for parking.

As an act of goodwill, you would hope they would refund your fiver or at the very least, give you a voucher
to spend on food/drink in the cafe.

That would have been the point I'd have told them to stuff it.

I have it on fairly good authority (someone who used to work there), that due to some of the terms in the deeds of the land that they can't enforce parking fines there.

Park in the Bretton village hall car park and walk in from there.

Places don't like cash these days, with the increased security around holding it, transporting it, paying it in etc.

That's why a lot of places are now card only.
