But Slovakia made it incredibly difficult. 11 men in defence for the whole game. Any side would find that hard to break down. Fair play for successfully parking the bus.

Yes, wouldn't have happened if they'd played a team that had players from the supposedly best league in the world, oh wait a minute. No excuses that was poor.

Agreed. However, the good teams are going to come across "Parked buses". The best teams find a way round the bus. We were found wanting tonight. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but perhaps Vardy & Sturridge are better as impact players coming off the bench? But what do I know?

Yes they did but I am sure that Slovakia would have looked at their fixtures and thought that their best chance of qualifying was,to beat awakes and Nick a point against England and/or Russia. Thus they would have set up to try to win against Wales, whereas as they had got their win, set up to nick a point against England, which they did.

Did you not spot the fact that when they got the ball then they ran forward with it?

Whereas we looked like we were going to score, building from the back, sometime in 2023?

No matter how the opposition "park the bus" it is no excuse for the inability to deliver a half-decent cross (particularly from corners). Clyne either got free himself down the right or got somebody else in and none of them managed to get a dangerous cross in.

Most of the time we just passed the ball around in front of them and tried to thread the ball through the eye of a needle to players tightly marked.

England allowed them to all get in the bus, reverse it slowly into position, then get out and get themselves ready before we started our attack.

We've got Vardy up top, one of the fastest strikers around and we slowly walk the ball up to him while he is surrounded by defenders.

    That's not tactics, that's idiocy.

Also why did we abandon the tactic of feeding Clyne down the right? ...... he had them on toast, they had no idea how to hanle him

We didn't abandon it, they took a striker off and put another full back on to nullify him. After that I don't think he got in again and no one else manage to do what he had been doing.

We are short of wide players. Sterling is rubbish at the moment, Townsend at home and Welbeck and the Ox injured. Having said that if Vardy knocks in that early chance the game is entirely different. From what I can see the England lads are putting in the work - just not getting the rewards. After seeing England fans knock spots of the team for decades I'm happy enough to give them a break.

Thought we played OK, but yet again miles behind others.

Every tournament since I was a bairn we seem to be one step behind the likes of Italy, Germany etc. We use the tactics they had used 4 years previously, since when they have moved up a gear.

Yes, we played OK, and yes, they definitely parked the bus, but I just get the feeling that the better teams know that 'parking the bus' is a modern tactic that they have adapted their own game to identify and beat it.

Come on Norn Iron, park the bus tonight and prove me wrong.

Agree with that, also, our players seem to be as good as theirs but ultimately we fail......it isn't all down to bad luck. They seem (the others) to move more fluidly up , down and side to side where we make it look an effort.

For what it's worth I think England lack collective mental strength - the kind of self-belief that Italian and German sides possess. Call arrogance if you like. Our record against first rank nations in tournaments is pretty appalling. In the knock out stages in particular of either the Euros or World Cup when was the last time we beat anyone from this category? Answer - Spain - on penalties - in 1996 (when they were nothing like the team they are today). Before then you would have go back to 1966 and the final victory over West Germany. That's not only a bad record - it's downright spooky.

If we'd have played 4-4-2 with proper wingers and width we'd have hammered them yesterday. I fully get 4-5-1 against decent teams but Slovakia were dreadful.
