This board is incredibly quiet. Very few topics about the match. Anyway my take on yesterday's game. I was excited for this one having gone 3 weeks without football, and not being able to make it this Tuesday either. I predicted a scrappy game, where the odd goal would probably nick it. In the end I suppose I was right, albeit the game was won by a little flash of quality from Ben Pearson. First half, especially the first half an hour, I thought we looked dominant without actually being brilliant, if that makes sense. They were hardly out of their half, but we were unable to provide that end product. I thought Pearson looked very wasteful, purely because it seemed like he was fed up of playing a simple ball, and was looking for the Hollywood ball every time which never seemed to be on. Martin Cranie had a storming first half. He had their left winger on toast in the first half. Time after time he made a clean tackle and was still able to advance with the ball. He linked up well with Lalkovic who was very busy, although his end product let him down. I couldn't understand why he was on the right wing to start with though. He had little joy off Dickinson who forced him to shoot from distance several times. But as soon as he swapped wings with Jennings, he got in behind and forced the first goal. The 2nd half was pretty frustrating. After scoring early in the 2nd half and looking fairly comfortable for the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half, we then seemed content to sit back and accept a 2-0 win. That being said, I didn't feel as worried as I would usually when they pulled one back as Giant George Waring did an excellent job in holding the ball up. It was only when we were leaving Hemmings forward when defending the corner that the ball kept coming back. He's far from being a goalscorer but he could very well be the target man which enables the likes of Winnall, Jennings, Lalkovic and Hourihane to get forward and contribute. He did very well yesterday and was my man of the match. My moment of the match though was when big Jean looked like he was going to knock the ball forward, but decided to do a turn on the ball to beat their winger. It was incredible. Zinedine Zidane would have been proud of that. Not a classic by any stretch, but a step in the right direction, and 3 more points towards safety which is the main priority at present.
Pretty much as I saw it. Built on recent home performances, where we have won three without ever looking outstanding. But am more than happy with that. Biggest disappointment for me, esp straight after Ben's goal, was that we didn't pepper their keeper with shots - he couldn't hold a thing. Maybe Hemmings would have been the beneficiary and we would have all liked to have seen him get something. Pluses for me - Waring was great, reminded me of a younger me Pearson was class, if he put a stone on he'd be almost the new King Ronnie with that haircut (he looked like Ronnie strutting up the pitch for that goal). Hemmings 'tried' would love to see a big shot of confidence in him. Back four all good, even Lewin who I thought had a good game. Turnbull played well. Lal played well and ripped their defence to shreds at times. Thought Scowen looked good in his cameo - I have no worries about that lad. And big Sam ........ 'nuff said. Breath of fresh air. Negatives - Hourihane again not good enough for me, though he had one great shot. Not writing him off by any means but he needs either a rest or a kick up the ar5e. Jennings attitude. there were glimpses of good stuff from him, but when it didn't come off he put his head down. Biggest negative for me, lack of movement from throw ins and set pieces. Was like watching a game of chess at times when going forward. All in all, a third consecutive enjoyable but cold trip south to see us win.
Very frustrated.............again by Jennings. Without a doubt potentially one of the better players in this league but consistently fluffs his lines. He can go past three players like they weren't there, then pass it two yards to a defender! Craine good, Waring good (needed a decent player alongside him!) and Pearson oozed class all game, also thought LLkovic or whatever his name is was good too.
