This is extremely unlikely in my case as I have never bought a lottery ticket in my life. Nevertheless, I have not allowed this to stop me musing upon how I would spend my winnings. Obviously, the first thing to do is to make sure that my family and loved ones are secured for life. However, with such a large sum, there is bound to be some money left. Would you invest in BFC and if so how much would you invest and would you stipulate how the money is used? Would you want a seat on the board?
I would invest in the club, but in the same way that Patrick Cryne has. I would be focused on a self-sustaining business model but be willing to put money into the club to develop revenue streams (with the expectation of not receiving my initial investment back). I would expect a seat on the board, and would have a HUGE focus on improving the marketing and brand image of the club. That's not me slating the current people, but I'd ensure they had a much bigger budget to work with and more strategic objectives.
That isn't what Patrick Cryne has done is it? I can't think of any examples where he has invested money into creating a revenue stream, all I see is examples of where he and his board have sanctioned contracts and signings that the club cannot afford and have therefore had to put money in to balance the books.
I should have split the sentence up further. Cryne has tried to create a self-sustaining business model - that is what I would be focused on doing. When in crisis, he has spent money on transfers/wages to preserve our status in the league and protect our revenue streams (by not dropping down a league). I can only assume this is because our business plan is reliant on being in the Championship. As far as I know, he hasn't passed on these debts to the club - but I understand that they have effected our current budget. e.g. 1 in 1 out policy However, I wouldn't do that - I would try to build revenue streams that aren't football related to support the football activities. Does that make more sense?
I would want to buy the Club and land. Then I would initially put £10 million into the Club and after that balance the books. 10% Free share issue to the fans who can produce a Colchester ticket or have had a season ticket for 5 out of the last 10 years. Build a hotel and conference centre in partnership with a major hotel chain on the car park to generate a year round income stream. Triple the size of the Academy. I would be the "Boss" end of. In other words "Total Control". I can do what ever I want with my own money.
****** to that.... For a £20m investment I'd wanna pick the team and play centre forward To save me running about, the team tactics would be to knock the ball in to my feet and set me up for tap ins and pens. 20 goals per season. Fact Any complainers on here, can come have a chat with me in the car park with my army of tanks
Re: ****** to that.... Not a chance I'd put any of it into football. With that much money football would be the last thing on my mind!
No I've argued continually that Patrick Cryne shouldn't put any money in to the club and that we should stand on our own two feet. Be a bit hypocritical if I then shoved a load of money in myself. I want to support a proper club that earns its crust and pays its way, not one with a sugar daddy. It makes any success that comes our way all the more special.
I wouldn't pump money into wages transfer's etc, but I would put money into the infrastructure, ie:- finish the ground off ( after buying it back ). I would then put money into employing a good chief exec and any other staff he deemed necessary to run the club on a sound footing. Then for good measure I would put in a priceing structure for season tickets and matchday tickets that would encourage people to come and watch the reds. If that didn't work to bring the fans in then I would plough it all up and plant pototoes and uck off to Benidorm and spend the rest of my life getting issed. Hope this helps, Toot Toot.
In the short term, investment in players and their wages brings the investor praise and adoration from fans. In the long term, the tap has to be turned off and the flow of money has to stop. The reaction from many is that the investor should promptly **** off and make way for some other mug, as though there is a long queue of millionaires stretching along Grove Street. Consequently, any investment I made would have to be done anonymously. I would not invest in players or their wages. I would however make grants to fund any capital investment that the club thinks would show a good return, like a new west stand including facilities to ensure that it can be used on non match days. My real passion though is the academy. We have not had a good return on the money spent in terms of the players that we have produced. I have my suspicions why this might be. I would be prepared to invest in order to put this right.
i would buy myself a place in the royal rumble and cling to the ropes 4 dear life, wrestlemania here i come
I recently heard that you cannot do this sort of thing with lottery money. You can use money to spend on anything you like for you personally, and for family and friends, but when it comes to things like this it isn't allowed. Don't shoot the messenger, it's simply what I read or heard somewhere. Before hearing this I always said I'd put £10m into the club if I won £100m.
You'd probably help build a new West Stand. That's it - Something that will have a legacy, unlike investing in new players which is more gambling with your money.
I'd be knocking Paddy's door down. I'd give 'em 10 million, and stipulate none of it should be spent on players. Refurbing stands, offering reduced tickets, rework the academy/scouting structure, improve the foundations. And I'd want 5 season tickets each year for life.
Quote from John Ryan this morning "You can't do right for doing wrong" With regard to owning a football club. Who wants to spend THEIR money and then be called all the names under the sun and accused of all sorts by fans who have a bizarre sense of entitlement ? But if I did lose my marbles it'd be bye bye Don, Barry, Oakwell community assets and hello COMMERCIALLY MINDED people and ownership of stadium and land.
