Just reading official book on Zulu War .... .. very interesting and portrays things in pretty different light to the film 'Zulu' (excellent film though)
It depicts Rorkes Drift as a 'skirmish' that was elevated to that of a 'war-saving' battle' and that 11 VC's were awarded purely to deflect public and political opinion from the disaster earlier in the day at Isandlwana.
Lieutenants Chard and Bromhead were described by their superiors as two of the dullest, stupidest officers in the army who would have fled the post had it not been for the Commissary Dalton who pointed out that semi-naked Zulu's could run a lot faster than heavily armed British soldiers and that it may be agood idea to stay-put. He was also apparently responsible for the defensive tactics employed.
I'll get me coat ......
