Good - redeveloping the town centre, something decent to look at etc. Now they need to shut down everything on Wellington Street and redevelop them buildings.

Really don't understand what your problem is. Looks like a good way to get works of art on the cheap.

Of course, if you are one of those who sees no worth in art whatsoever then I understand your position. Thank goodness for you that others don't feel that way - otherwise you'd live in a pretty bleak world.

Turning that Car APrk into a Park is costing over £1m. I am pretty sure that that money could have been spent better.

The trouble is that the shower running Barnsley spend OUR money like its going out of fashion. I bet they dont spend thier own like that.

Its a 33m high lump of rusty steel, proper art that

This is pretty much the case with all Labour run councils and this isn't a political point just an observation based on years of working as a project manager with councils the full length and breadth of the country.

I disagree in principle with what you day, however having looked at a picture of the so called "art", I'd have to agree it looks *****.

That £1 million is being put back into contractors who in turn pay their lads who in turn buy their dinners, lunch, coffees etc in Tarn. So it's not a case that £1 million is just 'gone', it's an investment in the area. That's what the council should be doing.

    Fair play.

I agree that in time like the public spending is vital to lick start the economy that a basic Macro Econonic principle. However, it should be spent on somthing worthwhile, look at Nelson Mandella gardens and the money that was spent on that, what a white elephant that is.

Secondy that money should be invested not spent, invest on somthing that is going to create real jobs real profit. The only money that a 33m lump of rotting steel will make will be when in 20 years time it ends up down Boulder Bridge lane

Some people won't be happy until Barnsley is a festering hole in the ground. Then they will have something to moan about. I think....

I do like this idea of lick starting the economy though! I'll have a 99.... no a magnum! No, I'll have a 99.... Got any juice Mister? :D

I agree, but its also fair to say that some people seem intent on speeding up that process.

I think it looked quite impressive in the Sculpture Park ,it will be interesting to see how it looks in a different enviroment, and lets not forget the Council hasn't commissioned it ,its on loan. The fountain on the other hand is a bad idea , most of the year it will be turned off, and its an on going cost to the Council to maintain it. The one on the Bullring in Wakefield adds nothing to the area except mild entertainment when a drunk walks through it

Good. The first step towards solving a problem, is admitting the problem exists. :)

    Pft..

What would the UK look like had councils and governments not invested in public ammenities.

What would the town centre be like without the town hall?

What would London be like without the palace of westminster?

The list of civil improvements with little face commercial value are legion.

Of course to the narrow minded, shallow and selfish such acts of investment which have been funded over the years by politicians of every ilk and creed would seem to be a waste of money but thankfully most people see a bit further and wider.

I have no problem with sensible Publuc Sector expendiute, I do have a problem with waste. The first thing every councilor should ask themselves when voting on such an issue is WOULD I SPEND MY OWN MONEY LIKE THIS
