Oakwell gym to be named after Stones
By Doug O'Kane, Sports Editor Friday 24th May 2013
    John Stones.

Barnsley Football Club's gym will be renamed the John Stones Fitness Suite and the walls covered in photos of the England under 19 international in order to inspire other players to emulate his success.

This is part of a series of changes manager David Flitcroft is making at Oakwell over the summer. He is also looking at ways to stop 'neglecting families' and will change the lay-out of the offices and entrances at the club.

Stones played 28 times for Barnsley before moving to Everton in January in a deal thought to be worth £3million.

Flitcroft said: "Stonesy built his character in there. Guy Proctor (fitness coach) had him down there for two years locked in the dungeon and he came out a man. Some of the young lads at this club have a lot of talent but you need to be physically strong to play men's football. "Stonesy is a perfect example of what you can do through hard wor

So when you go to the main reception area of a Championship Football Club, taking someone along who is looking to do business with that club, there won't just be a small window with someone behind it asking " Yes ?"

    Progress.

Can I suggest sponsorship on a match by match basis; selecting a key member of the opposition?

Players will be going into John Stones. Not sure what he feels about that but he is thought to be at least uncomfortable...

    Excellent idea

with my track record of predictions and opposition analysis, I could guarantee their star man a stinker every week. Where do I sign?

How much will having his name on the building cost John Stones in sponsorship or how much extra income will it generate cos surely in business that's what "sponsorship" means.

I'm a bit worried we're locking players in dungeons until they come out men! Good idea though, as you do more of this type of thing it all adds up.

"a small window with someone behind it asking " Yes ?"" - better than a dog-eared, tatty, out of date phone list stuck to the wall like at our place :)

Surely would be better for young lads to see players like foster and bobby on the walls rather than a player that has played about 25 games of 1st team football

    Re: Excellent idea

    Why would it?

What's Hassell done or Foster to be thought of as someone they want to look up at.
Foster's played most of his career so far at Champ level. Hassell’s got a larger percentage at lower than champ level.
Neither have played any games at junior England level and non have moved to a premier league club never mind one of the best premier league clubs.
Stones was respected by all the players from what I understand and Stones was a far better player than most of them even though he was 18.
If you’re coming in to the club this summer at first year pro level or first year scholar level what’s going to make you inspired.
Highest level champ player or someone who’s played or u19’s and been picked in large u20’s squad for the summer? U19’s player who at big prem club all day long.
It shouldn’t just inspire the junior members of the club, it should inspire the older members too. They will also have seen Stones train and they will have seen how hard he trains.
And on match days. I used to watch him and he used to go through his warm up’s at 100% effort then go and do short medium pass range with Dawson and he was focused. They used to pass the ball to each other as hard as possible like they would in a match.

    Re: Excellent idea

commend the positivity, but have to say a bit baffled by this. naming a gym after someone who played a couple dozen games, then jumped ship at the first chance? just seems a bit odd. but hey, all for progress and forward thinking.
