Or who refuse to ever like any song a band or group will ever release because they are 'manufactured' are pretentious arsewipes

A song sounds no different if the bloke on drums is officially part of the band or not. One direction comprising of 20 people, 4 singers and 16 musicians would sound no different to one direction comprising of 4 people, all singers with a hired band playing the instruments yet to some people it instantly makes a song **** and not worthy of their ears.

Telling someone that the music they listen to is **** is like telling someone their missus is ugly. Pointless. Means nowt. You just sound a twohat.

    In other words I agree.

    Many thanks for the compliment.

    Just what is wrong with

    a) A drummer
    b) A bass guitarist
    c) A lead and/or rhythm guitarist
    d) A vocalist

who can perform songs both in the studio and/or live?

No need for any manufacturing of sound in studios - let the talent (or otherwise) speak for itself.

Personally I prefer bands / artists who can actually do it live, alright it won't sound the same as a studio album but at least it shows the basic talent is there. That been said if I like a song/tune I like it regardless.
Still amuses me though when the ones who are fine tuned to the nth degree put themselves up there with the actual talent, especially when they start judging on talent shows.

The above criteria fits a fair share of mainstream music. So I'm not sure what your point is?

The difference is a manufactured band is put together by people who don't give a **** about music. They are only interested in selling records.

Proper bands exist to make the best music they can.

I don't have a problem with mainstream music it's just that most of the mainstream music in this country is pop music and it is generally not a genre I like to listen to.

the biggest problem I have with your example of One Direction is that without X Factor they wouldn't exist, it's been too easy for them to make it

Only my opinion, but I'd imagine that there's a good proportion of 'real' band members or musicians that are in it as much for the rock star lifestyle and fame as they are for just the music.

How do you explain bands who make the type of music knowing for a fact they won't sell many records

Bands don't have to be manufactured to be mainstream either. There are plenty good bands out there who are in the mainstream but are extremely talented as well. But i best not mention these bands because that would mean my taste in music is **** and im not cool.

It doesn't automatically make it good music if it's not popular.

Music is just a noise really, made in a certain way that it pleases the human brain. It doesn't have to be made by drums, guitars and a voice. It can be made by anything, even synthesised. It's so varied in nature, which is a good thing as human brains are so varied too. So whatever sounds good to you is good music, to you. So to tell someone it isn't is just a nonsense.

To take it to an extreme I'd say that if you're making music that nobody likes I'd say, just IMO, that it's bad music, as it doesn't serve a purpose, music is made to be listened to surely?

In order to earn my respect, a band must :-

    a. Write their own material.
    b. Be able to play their own instruments to a high degree of proficiency.
    c. Sound as good live as they do on record.

If they tick all of those boxes, they will have earned my respect. They will also possess genuine talent and the application needed to exploit it. That does not mean that I will enjoy their music. There will be loads of bands who tick all the above boxes, but who still fail to capture my interest. But that is down to personal taste, and my personal taste is for progressive rock. It is a mystery to me, though, how anyone can be criticised for their taste in popular music. Pop music, by definition is transient. What is popular today is not tomorrow, and that goes for genres and not just for songs or bands. However, I do mistrust the likes of Simon Cowell, who it seems to me, is there simply to make money for himself by taking advantage of both the band and the buyer of the band's records, and who has no interest in music other than to exploit either end of the chain of supply for his own gain. I dislike Simon Cowell and his formulaic pop production line, and I dislike anything he has some connection with because it will automatically fail to meet my original criteria. I dislike all manufactured bands. The process offers no innovation, which should be the basis for popular music, it simply steals from the past.

And the kids in particular love it.

I'll listen to any genre, and I do mean any, as long as it sounds good to me, there's the occasional pop song that I enjoy. I'll not listen to something just because of what it is though. There's garbage in every genre.

Music is music if you like it listen to it if you don't turn it off. The Beatles were a mainstream band. Girls Aloud are a fantastic pop band. The Monkees were a manufactured band and made some great songs. Coldplay are a 'real' band but *****. There are no rules.

I love music that appeals to my ears for whatever reason.

The first ten songs on my spotify playlist:

    Dogs Eating Dogs - blink-182
    Inbetween Days - The Cure
All the things she said - TATU
House of Love - East 17
Mack the Knife - Frank Sinatra
    A letter to Elise - blink-182 cover
    Cutting Deep - Darren Styles
    Deadbolt - Thrice
Life on Mars - David Bowie
    Zombie - Cranberries

I love music. Actually enjoying James Blunt of late. Guess that makes me uncool now? Oh, I forgot, I already was. :D

    One direction are gash.

I do like bands who have the basic musical line-up: singer, bass, lead guitar, drummer and percussion but if I like a song by a band who don't fit this criteria I will still like it.
