No, the Doctor is an alien. It has been written that Time Lords can change gender (take the Master/Missy), if anything it's weird that he has been a man (and a white one at that) 12 times in a row. The examples you gave of Spiderman and James Bond also don't make sense as they always remain the same person (they had different actors but it's still supposed to always be the actual same guy). The Doctor is supposed to regenerate into someone completely different and random each time.

    - sinistreInitial reaction was it is the BBC 'ticking boxes' but on reflection I don't see why the Doctor cannot have a sex change. Fortunately as an alien he has never shown any interest in sex, otherwise, seeing how after each regeneration they retain some memories of their last incarnation the first one or two episodes could be ...ahem...inetesting. i.e. A man..... with 'urges.'....... and boobs... and a......well you know!!

Anyway, my first reaction on seeing Catherine Tate appear in the Tardis at the start of the runaway bride was that she would make me turrn it off. Glad I did not. In fact she turned out to be one of the best , most rounded assistants, for me at any rate, in any of the Dr Whos. Billie Piper also did a fine job but that was due in part to the chemistry between her and Tennant and the writng.

Tom Baker was probably the best - quite sinister and alien -and I would have loved him to have neen in the 'reboot CGI era' where the alien ostumes were not made from Tin foil, cling film, bubble wrap and cardboard toilet roll tubes and looked like someone had made them during a sequeence wher they used to show viewers how to make stuff like your own Tracy Island from Thunderbirds '

Hated the John Per'twee' era as it was . Very !! Didn't much like Davison either with the stupid shirt with a question mark on the collar.

Trouble with Capaldi era was not the man himself but the scripts were neither one thing nor the other. It ceased to be family vieiwing with convoluted plots, sub plots and strange dialogue that kids would not understand, whilst, at the same time, some of the storylines were a bit juvenile (mosnters under the Thames !!!??? ) Thats what DW always was .. lots of monsters, family viewing, not too 'challenging'

Writing was pretty poor in the last series.

Tsk! It should be Doctor Who not Doctor Sue! (Must be said in an Alan Partridge voice).

William hartnell looked every inch the part...still can remember him getting a brilliant reception the year he stood holding the roll bar in a open topped green land rover as it gently drove past at the finningley RAF base air show ( now Robin Hood airport ) ....Tom baker came close after him I lost interest to be honest although I did see the odd one up to Sylvester McCoy..Whilst ive seen it advertised its never really struck a chord with me even when the BBC brought it back revamped

The Doctor is an alien, a time traveller, has two hearts, isn't actually a Doctor, can regenerate into different bodies, is a fictional made up fantasy and yet.... people can't get their heads round her being a female lady woman.

Apparently they are dropping the W and renaming it Dr Ho , as a concession to the anti PC brigade
