So is it the case we have to move the game or its just a request? Do they just charge us more if we don't agree?
I am going to say something controversial here. It's not the fault pf South Yorkshire Police so let's not blame them. Have you ever drunk too much in a local derby? Have you ever got into an altercation with a Leeds / Sheff U / Shef W / Doncaster fan? Then, IT IS YOUR FAULT. Not the police, the club, Sky, the football league, YOU. You who is reading this message.
With Sheffield United friendly and Brentford game that's three home games ruined already. Why does our club have no backbone and always bow down to the police instead of looking after their own fan base?
Couldn't agree more. That last Leeds game at 1715 was ridiculous. Only time in years i hsve feared for my sons safety at a match. All dowm to booze. I like a pre match pint as much as the next man but if people behave properly this wouldn't keep happening.
I'm assuming Leeds United requested it, on the basis that all Cup Finals are played on Sundays nowadays.
I'd have thought they'd have moved it to Friday night, thus giving Leeds more time to recover for their Champions League fixture the following midweek.
I agree with the sentiment in this, we have an idiot element and I’d wager they come out in force on such occasions. However there seems only to be South Yorkshire police who have to move these games every single time. How are they going to cope with premier league followings at Bramall Lane? They arent going to get premier league games moved, you can be sure of that. Crowds there will be double ours, Sheffield United have as many or more drunken idiots and the away followings will regularly be several thousand. There are similar fan issues at most clubs all around the country. I’m not trying to excuse our fans, but that is true. Some derbies around the country are moved at police request - but sporadically. SYP move every game. It is absolutely ridiculous, and i can’t see why other police forces cope perfectly fine, yet SYP can’t. Or won’t. This move will mean either my son missing an early season rugby match or us both missing the game. It really isn’t on, two home games in a row now with Brentford after.
Putting aside whose fault it is, the fixtures were released almost a month ago. No excuse for taking so long to come up with this decision. I’n now missing Brentford at home, as im on a trip which was planned to accommodate that very game. The Leeds game change will mean we have to choose between playing or watching that Sunday.
I don't think it is controversial, I've witnessed the behaviour of a minority of fans at games like this and its f***ing appalling. I would, however, like to see evidence that changing the fixture time / date to police the morons better reduces the trouble because in this day and age alcohol is still available to those who want a skin-full before the match. If the idiot element want to cause trouble and fight then they will regardless of the kick off time and day. This kind of decision impacts a lot more on the normal, decent, well behaved fans. It does my head in.
Im not sure your getting the sentiment of the thread tbh. Yes there’s an element of fekwits follows us on these games but does that mean the vast majority have to suffer because SYP don’t know what else to do ? There’s more trouble at Leeds Wendy/blunts but SYP don’t trouble the time slot very often. Your post seems to suggest we have more troublesome fans than any other on south York’s and more trouble which I really don’t think we do at all. The ? Is why us all the time . I’m as frustrated st this idiot element as anyone but to single us out for different treatment there’s something funny going on at SYP headquarters imo.
Every local derby will be ruined this season due to these changes in kick off time. I'm surprised the Hillsborough game hasn't been brought forward yet. The most nonsensical part is the fact that Huddersfield are playing Sheff Wednesday at 12:00 on the same Sunday, so this change has meant that four Yorkshire clubs will be playing at roughly the same time. Four sets of fans on the trains potentially. Bizarre. The argument that moving games reduces trouble only applies in my opinion, if a tea time kick off is altered. A late Saturday kick of does potentially increase the risks as everyone is on the beers all day. But early games just sees people drinking even earlier, chucking even more alcohol down even quicker in the reduced time allowed, then being more drunk. Does the risk of trouble reduce? Not for me. If anything some fans will want to hang around the pubs afterwards. What it does do, is affect the atmosphere. I cannot remember an early kick off where the atmosphere has felt like a derby game. It's always stale and quiet. Plus, on a side note, I don't recall us having a good record in early games, to the point where I'm struggling to remember the last time we won an early local derby... possibly as far back as the Leeds 4-1 game on New Years Day a few years back?
Loads of fierce big city derbies are played at 3 o clock. Barnsley do appear to be singled out by SYP. I can't recall in recent times when there have been hundreds or thousands of naughty people running amock in barnsley on a derby day. Yes there are a minority but this would require moderate policing with a crowd of 18,000. I'm often staggered at the numbers of police on duty on football day in barnsley. Nice to see our public servants prepared to come in and work over-time on a match-day but seldom any other. (I say this as i often work with the police and i know how few police there are actually on duty "protecting" our peoples, sometimes only four in the whole of barnsley:yep 4!)
Some of the times games get moved to are ridiculous. A lot of people have family/social habits/commitments on a Friday night, Saturday evening or Sunday lunchtime.
Doesn't bother me at all it being a sunday. I don't drink on a sunday because i'm up at 5 am monday mornings for work. It also saves me from whatever torture our lass has got planned. ( Either preparing and cooking sunday dinner or trapesin' round Meadowhall). Downside Meadowhall might be brought forward to satdi
