Honestly not trying to another tedious thread about BFC's transfer dealings, but I think this lad is starting to look like he might be our MVP. Couldn't imagine ever saying that 6 months ago!!
Well if you remove half a dozen or more better players from the squad then it does make his task in looking impressive somewhat easier. And when you identity parade him with the other M People in midfield, he may begin to stand out. To date he is a poor man's Brian Howard. But now's his big chance
Having said I didn't want to start another tedious debate/ I've changed my mind ... although I'm coming at it from a different angle ... i.e. he doesn't only have a year left. Given that he's looked very good for us in his last 10[?] games, should we be looking to extend his contract now? Assuming he carries on in the same form when would be the ideal time to try and extend his contract? Personally I think I would try now as I can't see a downside. Even if he reverted to the start of last season's form, surely we'd still be able to sell him and break even?
If the club have learnt from recent sales then yes. If Hecky wants him as part of his long term plans offer him an improved contract with an extra year now. Longer the contract runs down the more power/incentive the player has to turn it down.
Never really been sure as to what the optimum point would be, or how to get a player to sign new terms. I always thought that if you offered a new deal to a player he would think to himself, 'if they're offering an extension then I must be good, maybe I should look for a bigger club' but your post has opened my eyes a bit. Hadn't really thought about it, but I guess if you offer them improved package then they have a big decision to make i.e. take the improved money now (for possibly 2 years or so) or wait for a couple of years on a lower salary for a bigger pay day at the end ( if they don't get crocked or lose form in the meantime). Not sure why I hadn't thought of that before
Should be offering now and when he walks for peanuts because we don't im excited for everyone on here to tell me nothing could have been done. Excited to watch him play til that happens mind.
Spot on. It's all about weighing up the benefits on offer now or "chance" your arm. you never know what's going to happen tomorrow. Guaranteed improved terms for 3 years? Or risk holding off for next 2 years. That's when to be offering deals. Not 4 or 5 months before a contract ends. Risk/Reward is then too heavily in players favour. Obviously the risk to bfc is we are tied to a player, for more money, for longer, who may either not live up to the hope, or get crocked. However if we are to progress we need to take the odd chance if Hecky deems the player good enough.
Now you've given me a bit of a dilemma. On the one hand I want BFC to get the best deal, but on the other hand I can see how excited you are to be proved right. Feels like they'd be taking something important from you, I guess we'll find out in a couple of years
Probably long enough for us to start getting some reward for patience and development only to lose him cos he is skinning everyone with 12 months left.
Should offer him an extension now. Any player with confidence in their own ability should take any extra cash on offer. should believe that they will get a move to a bigger club anyway whatever length of contract they are on
Well it's that old chestnut again... This season is No 2 of 3 So unless he signs another deal this season.. he,'ll be gone this time next year So don't get too attached..
Where did he play last night? He played deep in the first game but i personally felt he'd be better off higher up the field.
