This has come a long way from the early tinny tunes.
some if it is really quite good as well One particular track I keep finding is The Dragonborn comes from Skyrim
For a long time one of my favourite music videos has been the version by Lyndsey Stirling and Peter Hollens

But I just found this - from an entire concert of video game music by the Swedish Radio Symphony orchestra - I thought it was quite good

The whole concert is worth a listen if you like that sort of music in the background whilst ploughing through a whole load of trial results at work

Can anyone suggest other similar to keep my mind off goings on concerning managers takeovers etc

If you like music like that check out Two Steps from Hell. They have huge playlists on YouTube. You'll recognise a lot of their music as it used in a lot of places.

You're right, but the funny thing is that those "early tinny tunes" are usually the most memorable and the ones that I like the most. :)

Too often modern game soundtracks aim for that generic "epic" sound that may work as background music and helps to build up the atmosphere, but once I quit the game, I can't remember the music at all.

Yes you are right - which is why it makes good background music both for the video games and also for working to :)
There are a few exceptions like the track from Skyrim but most of it doesnt really stick in the mind

Fallout is one of my favorites for in-game music

It’s a classic :) Just need to hear a few beeps and all them memories come flooding back. Used to go to a few computer clubs, which were literally meets where you’d go to buy blank floppies and copy the latest games.
Hearing that game tune, I can’t only remember the time, it triggers memories of the distinct smell of a computer club.

Grant Kirkhope is one of the greats from the 90s with Rare. Nintendo's Koji Kondo takes some beating too.

Music by David Whittaker. He was the main man for game soundtracks back then.

I used to work for a software games company based in Brampton and can remember he was commissioned to compose the music for a game called Infection on the Amiga that one of the lads had come up with. He was from Monk Bretton and later moved out to States to become a software director at EA.

Not that I'm an expert of retro game music, but this one's my favourite by him. Great tune from a not so great game. :)

One of the games I'd give a perfect 10/10 is FTL, in no small part because of the brilliant soundtrack. It perfectly captures the feeling of being on a small spaceship in the middle of nowhere.

There's also another fantastic space game, Stellaris that's quite recent, and is probably the most easy to listen to out of this lot.

The music from SimCity 3000 is fantastic, as well as the Sims series itself. So good in fact a lot of the music has appeared in other media.

Things weren't too bad twenty years ago, one of my favourite soundtracks ever. Perhaps a little tinny at times, but absolutely perfect for the game.

Then there's this, but this is probably more due to the nostalgia

    Nothing beats this.

If my playlist skips to this whilst I'm on the A6195 my automatic diesel executive saloon transmutes into a rocket ship - or a Toyota Yaris....

Hue and Whale-Tail Frenzy have good soundtracks.
