When I was at school I was thin. Very thin. This continued through my teenage years and into my early 20s. My legs looked like matchsticks from which the wood had been removed. I devoured enormous quantities of food which had no effect whatsoever. Now I look like I'm about to give birth to triplets. I've played sport all my life, I still go skiing for 4 weeks per winter and I walk hundreds of miles in the summer. Is putting weight on an inevitable part of getting old?
No, but for most of us, in order to prevent that, we have to cut down the amount we eat. Certainly of particular types of food. And drink. Not being critical of you by the way, it's just how it is unfortunately.
I know you're right of course. I eat too much of the wrong food and drink too much of the right beer. I could probably cut down and lose weight. However, I know others of my age with similar eating/drinking habits who are not overweight. I'm going to sneak up on them one day and pinch some of their genes.
I was thinking about this earlier as my favourite pair of trousers have got noticeably a bit tighter in the last few weeks. I've had said pair of trousers since I was 16(!) and they're a great barometer to measure myself against. I think that when you buy new clothes it's really hard to notice slight changes but by having one item that I keep consistent it's very easy to compare and nip it in the bud before it becomes a problem. Disclaimer: I do own more than one pair of trousers!
I think Jay was spot on and I believe most of know that if we put on weight it's caused by putting more fuel in than we burn. For me the problem was that by the time I noticed that I didn't need as much fuel, it was too late. I think you've got plenty of time before you need to worry though!
Biscuits are my downfall! It goes in cycles as when we have some in the house I eat loads, then I ban them for a bit, then we get some. It's a continuous loop.
