Money spent on transfers is irrelevant really. It’s how much they want to commit to the wages bill that will determine success or failure.
I would assume that 'significant' means it gives the ability to compete for the type of player that would improve our situation. But how do statements about bringing in 'Championship-ready' players relate to what has happened up to now? Perhaps the disconnect that Hecky referred to still exists?
With the increase in Season Ticket holers this season and this weeks sad news it is important for the new owners to demonstrate some intent.
Forgot to include the possibility of bringing Knasmuller in as well. That's if we can get him to pick us against others who might be showing interest.
The problem with investment in football is that it is never going to be enough, because the ambition of the football supporter can never be satiated. If we survive this season, fans will want to see improvement, not only next season, but in every season thereafter. Improvement requires investment, and the transfer fee is not the end of the investment is it, because increased transfer fees automatically mean higher wage demands and increasing losses in the annual accounts. Forget FFP, I am concerned that patience is exhausted long before then. Our revenue is not enough to sustain this investment, so some form of additional revenue is required and it is suggested that this revenue will come from our foreign owners by way of sponsorship and naming rights deals. Whether our new owners want to pay inflated sums in order to subsidise our football club is not know, but the whole thing makes me somewhat uneasy. I have watched Barnsley Football club for over 50 years, and throughout that time, it has almost always been a financial struggle. The club has performed above the expectations of the rest of football. I am not sure how realistic it is to expect that to continue in the climate of increasing disparity between rich and poor. Another thing that I am uneasy about is expecting someone who has absolutely no connection with my town to put their hand in their pocket, when those of us who watch every week are so obviously unwilling to do so. I'm sorry, but something does not seem right to me. Fair enough, we were cheap, but a bargain was only a bargain for as long as it takes you to work out that it was not. If the bargain is going to be a sink hole for additional capital demands and a nightmare of unsatisfied supporter aspirations spilling over into and affecting their other businesses, then it quickly become a financial and PR disaster. I wonder what our new owners reaction will be to the backlash from supporters frustrated because they are disappointed by the lack of progress. Whether they are fully prepared for that backlash. I will be honest. I do not see this ending happily for all parties. Perhaps that is just me, and I hope that I am wrong. It just depends what our new owners think they bought, what they want from it and how they intend to make a return on their investment . Only time will tell, but do not expect them to be as patient, or as understanding as our last custodian.
I am pretty much a glass half empty person but realistically on current form I fully expect us to be relegated. It appears that we are hanging on other sides continuing to be poor rather than our performances improving and us climbing the table. I had some hope with the takeover that it would enhance our survival chances but in the short period of time they have been involved I see no difference from before. Shame really
True, we could, but if we dont spend anything , then we are far more likely to go down. Just because we COULD get relegated does not mean that NOT spending is the right decision! the answer is to spend enough, but not to over spend!
So you prefer to spend very little because if we are going down anyway it will still be in the bank ?
No I'm just saying it's not as simple as just spend some money. If it's not on a player that fits into the club then it's wasted money.
I wish somebody would show me where these free season tickets, programmes, shirts and bovrils can be collected from
This post is possibly the most depressing thing ever posted on here. Just because we have struggled in years gone by, it is not acceptable to have no optimism !!
Whilst I understand where you are coming from (probably similar vintage) I have to ask myself what all the 'exciting future' talk was all about if all we can look forward to is more of the same. In other words, if the 'we aren't going to go crazy' statement actually means that we continue to 'punch above our weight' and sell at the first opportunity, then I guess I will not be the only one to be bitterly disappointed. As things stand I am expecting a meek slide into League One (supporter since 1966 so I've paid my dues and learned to live with disappointment; it's the hope that kills you). But perhaps the next few days will bring a smile to our faces. Hope so...
purely and simply its down to wages, we just dont offer enough for this league. unless this changes then the recruitment wont either. Time for BFC to get real or go down.
Did post in another thread .a bit worried about we don' seem to get a transfer over the line ..is it a prob with the new CEO..or not paying enough . The CEO should be able to sell the club to the player is it happening we seem to be losing quite a few ....and would it happen if nabsford was still here and yes I know he isn' t Just comparing .
We've got two over the line, and during the summer we brought loads in. It's only one that has come to Oakwell and then changed his mind, and we're not privvy to why. I don't think the finger can be pointed at the CEO when we don't know any details.
A lot of our fan base are guilty of getting too carried away after the takeover. The clues were there that Barnsley FC weren't going to be a rich man's plaything. If Chien Lee was prepared to pump multi-millions into a football club, he would have bought it in its entirety, not taken a 40% share.
